United trailed at half-time to a Josh Fowler goal, his sixth of the William Hill Premiership campaign, before Cameron struck the second goal of his impressive loan spell from Rangers.
Fowler, the league’s top scorer, did not make it out for the second half due to illness. And Simo Valakari’s side were unable to repeat the trick of last Sunday at Aberdeen, when they successfully defended a 1-0 lead, with Jim Goodwin having plenty of attacking options to throw at the hosts.
The visitors had dominated the opening 20 minutes, with Jesse Randall proving a threat down the right. Dan Finlayson charged down the winger’s net-bound shot before Idjessi Metsoko met a Joshua Rawlins cross six yards out but headed weakly into Toby Steward’s arms.
Saints settled and forced Jack Walton into action after 17 minutes, the United goalkeeper saving Sam Stanton’s shot on the spin. Four minutes later, the hosts were ahead as United lost track of Fowler, who pounced on Enes Alic’s teasing cross to prod home.
United struggled to regain their early momentum, and Steward comfortably gathered Dylan Tait’s long-range effort before the break. Fowler was replaced by Ruari Paton at half-time, with the substitute soon teeing up Taylor Steven, who fired off target.
Paton then saw a shot spilled by Walton before the goalkeeper recovered to block Stanton’s follow-up. But Saints offered little else going forward as United began to take control, with Zac Sapsford and Lachlan Rose adding to the visitors’ attacking threat.
United finally found their equaliser 11 minutes from time. Randall sent a low delivery into the box and Sapsford’s clever dummy allowed the ball to reach Cameron, who stayed on his feet despite a nudge from Liam Smith before firing high past Steward.
There was still time for United to threaten a winner, but Steward produced an excellent stop from Sapsford after 90 minutes to ensure both sides left with a point.
