Matt Renshaw produced one of the most spectacular fielding moments of the South Africa vs Australia 2nd Test in Gqeberha, taking a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Ryan Rickelton late on Day 2. The remarkable effort helped Australia tighten their grip on the contest as South Africa finished the rain-affected day at 97/5.

The catch came off Scott Boland‘s bowling at a crucial stage, ending a promising partnership between Rickelton and South African captain Temba Bavuma. Australia had already made significant inroads into the home side’s batting line-up, and Renshaw’s brilliant effort delivered another major breakthrough.

Matt Renshaw takes a one-handed stunner

The dismissal arrived towards the end of the day’s play, when Australia were searching for one more wicket to strengthen their position. Rickelton had been working to rebuild South Africa’s innings alongside Bavuma after the hosts slipped to 40/4.

Boland found the edge, sending the ball towards the slip cordon. The chance looked difficult, with the ball travelling quickly and appearing to fall between the wicketkeeper and the close fielders.

Renshaw reacted instinctively, diving to his right and stretching out his right hand. He managed to grab the ball just above the turf, completing a stunning one-handed catch that left even the fielder himself looking surprised.

The effort was particularly impressive given the difficult light and the pressure of the moment. It also came shortly after Marnus Labuschagne had missed an opportunity to dismiss Rickelton, making Renshaw’s intervention even more valuable for Australia.

Rickelton departed for 31, ending a partnership that had offered South Africa a much-needed chance to stabilise their innings.

Scott Boland continues to impress with his fast bowling

While Renshaw’s fielding grabbed the headlines, Boland was once again Australia’s standout bowler. The right-arm seamer finished the day with figures of 4/31, removing four of South Africa’s top six batters.

Boland had already made an impact on Day 1, taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries. He continued to trouble the South African batters after play resumed on Monday, striking at important moments and preventing the hosts from building partnerships.

The Australian quick dismissed debutant Marques Ackerman before returning to remove Rickelton late in the day. His accuracy and ability to exploit the conditions made him a constant threat.

Mitchell Starc also contributed by dismissing Matthew Breetzke, while Australia’s bowling unit maintained pressure despite the limited time available on the field.

Rain interruptions disrupt South Africa’s fightback

The second day at St George’s Park was heavily affected by rain and a wet outfield. The first two sessions were lost before play eventually resumed, leaving only a shortened period for both teams to make progress.

South Africa began the day under pressure and quickly lost another wicket after the restart. The early setbacks left Bavuma with the responsibility of guiding the innings through a difficult phase.

The captain responded with a determined unbeaten 41, showing patience while trying to prevent further damage. Wiaan Mulder was unbeaten on two at stumps, and the pair will need to provide a substantial partnership if South Africa are to challenge Australia’s advantage.

At 97/5, however, the hosts still faced a significant task to recover.
