Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces mounting pressure at Manchester United as the club’s disastrous start to the season raises serious questions about Michael Carrick’s future.
The British billionaire acquired an initial 27.7 per cent stake in United in February 2024, with INEOS assuming responsibility for football operations despite the Glazer family retaining majority ownership.
Ratcliffe has since overseen significant changes to United’s recruitment structure, senior leadership and football strategy, but the expected transformation has yet to produce sustained success.
Carrick initially impressed after replacing Ruben Amorim, guiding United to third place in the Premier League before receiving the permanent managerial position.
However, United have won just two of their opening ten competitive matches this season, leaving the former midfielder under enormous scrutiny.
Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United extended their winless run to six matches, on what was also Ratcliffe’s 74th birthday.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring at Elland Road, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised shortly after half-time following another poorly defended set-piece.
As Centre Devils highlighted, United showed greater intensity but struggled to capitalise on attacking opportunities, ultimately appearing more concerned about avoiding defeat than securing victory.
Defensive instability, inconsistent performances and questionable game management have intensified criticism of Carrick.
Ratcliffe and United’s leadership could consequently face a difficult managerial decision if results fail to improve.
Meanwhile, the INEOS founder has confirmed his immediate plans away from Old Trafford.
Ratcliffe has travelled to Zimbabwe to celebrate his 74th birthday, confirming plans to visit two national parks during an eight-day stay.
The billionaire arrived in Victoria Falls on Saturday before playing golf at Elephant Hills Golf Course on Sunday.
Speaking to Chronicle Zim TV, Ratcliffe praised Zimbabwe’s hospitality and outlined his itinerary.
“It is my birthday today, and we have chosen Zimbabwe for my birthday,” he explained.
Ratcliffe confirmed that he would travel to Hwange National Park before continuing to Mana Pools, where he previously enjoyed a canoeing expedition along the Zambezi River.
He also described Zimbabwe’s hospitality as exceptional, awarding it a perfect ten out of ten.
His trip comes as United prepare for another important week, with Carrick desperately needing results to ease the pressure surrounding his position.
