Jaylen Brown talks clutch block vs. Pistons, fitting in with Sixers

DETROIT -- The game was in the balance at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night. The Philadelphia 76ers were clinging to a 106-102 lead as the Detroit Pistons were making one final push after Philadelphia led by as many as 18 on the night.

Joel Embiid missed a 3-pointer at the top of the key and Pistons star Cade Cunningham appeared ready to walk into a wing triple to look to cut the lead to one with roughly 37 seconds still to play. That's when Brown came streaking down and blocking Cunningham's 3-pointer and then also grabbed the rebound to get the possession for the Sixers and he was able to seal the 112-106 win for Philadelphia.

"Just sprinting back in transition," Brown recalled. "I could see Cade’s eyes. He was shooting the ball. So I didn't want to foul, but I was able to make a play right there. So that was it."

Along with the game-sealing block, Brown also scored 30 points on 11-for-19 shooting and had seven rebounds. Things have looked a bit clunky at times for Brown and the Sixers, but it's obvious that he is working his way into things game-by-game in an effort to help this group. He is looking to fit in and really give Philadelphia the production it needs from a guy like him.

"Yeah, I'm the new guy here, so I'm adjusting," Brown stated. "I'm just trying to complement and build off of what these guys have already built here in Philadelphia between VJ (Edgecombe), Tyrese (Maxey), and Joel (Embiid), just trying to add value, just add that mentality, but just try to complement those guys. That's my role as of now."

With that being said, Brown is still trying to fit in with the Sixers. The effort against the Pistons is a good step in the right direction, but Brown was with the Boston Celtics for 10 years. All of those years is a big deal and changing teams, especially a rival, can be overwhelming at times.

"It’s all new," Brown finished. "Everything is new. Kind of like everybody knows what it feels like when you just move into a new space and you're unpacking. Kind of feels like that. Feels like that, on and off the court, just trying to get settled a little bit, but it may take some time. But just putting my best foot forward, trying to win games and be a good teammate."

With that being said, while Brown is still working his way into fitting in with the Sixers, the team is winning. They're 8-1, including wins over the Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks, and they are building camaraderie and chemistry along the way. Adversity on the road can help with that.

"It’s huge," Brown finished. "First 10 games are always big to start a season. I've been in the league for a long time. It's my 11th year. First 10 games is like, set the tone for your year. Now we still got a lot of basketball to play even after the first 10 games. But it's always good to get off to a good start. And 8-1 is pretty damn good."
