Indian Railways’ quest for a fourth consecutive title was derailed as Indian Navy knocked out the defending champion 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the first semifinal of the 97th all-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament at the SDAT Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Saturday.

The teams were locked 2-2 in regulation time.

BPCL advanced to the final, pipping Indian Army in a penalty shootout.

Navy, the runner-up last year, held its nerve in the shootout, with goalkeeper Ankit Malik playing a key role.

Railways, meanwhile, will rue its poor conversion rate, having converted just one of the eight penalty corners it earned. Navy made the most of its only penalty corner.

After a goalless first quarter, Navy took the lead in the 27th minute through Yogesh Singh, who converted Abhishek Topno’s penalty-corner delivery with a drag-flick.

Railways drew level in the third quarter through Pratap Lakra’s drag-flick off a penalty corner. Atul Deep put Railways ahead in the 55th minute, scoring off a rebound after goalkeeper Sanjay Bhaskar had blocked Lovepreet Singh’s close-range attempt.

Navy forced a shootout with three minutes left when K. Selvaraj converted Sanjit Toppo’s long diagonal pass in the 57th minute.

Navy scored through Ashis Topno, Sanjit Toppo, Yogesh, and Kuldeep in the shootout, while Rajbeer Singh and Darshan Gawkar missed for Railways.

The results (semifinals): Indian Navy 2 (Yogesh Singh 27-pc, K. Selvaraj 57) drew with Indian Railways 2 (Pratap Lakra 39-pc, Atul Deep 55). Navy won the shootout 4-2.

Indian Army 1 (Akshay Dubey 27-pc) drew with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd 1 (Anmol Ekka 55-pc). BPCL won the shootout 4-1.
