Cardiff Met game marks midway point in phase one for Wrexham

Sunday’s home clash with Cardiff Met is the seventh league clash of the season for the defending champions, who are in a decent position to defend their crown.

Wrexham are second in the standings, three points adrift of front-runners The New Saints.

For the Reds, it was crucial they bounced back from their 4-3 defeat to The New Saints earlier this month - and they achieved that in some style.

A superb display made sure Wrexham were 8-1 winners at Swansea City and head coach Sugarman is looking to take this positive showing into Sunday.

She told the club: “Momentum’s massive in football and sometimes you can take a lot of work to get it and you can lose it easily.

“But, we don’t feel that one result is going to impact our preparation, our belief in what we’re doing or our ability to go into a game and get the result.

“Delighted with the performance; everyone’s happy scoring that many goals in particular.

“But, it’ll be back to work to make sure that our standards are high again because we’re going to face something completely different than we faced (at Swansea).”

Wrexham remain potent going forward and the eight goals they grabbed at Swansea took their tally for the campaign up to 33 so far.

Katie Barker’s hat-trick last time out now sees her on 10 for the season, level at the top of the scoring charts with TNS striker Fiona Barry.

Natasha Thomas, who has been away on international duty with Jamaica, has seven goals for the campaign, while Faye Knox opened her account for the season with a hat-trick at Swansea.

Since making a swift return to the top flight after relegation, Cardiff Met have picked up five points from their six games, with their last run out being a 2-2 draw with Barry.

Sunday’s big game is at third-placed Cardiff City, who play host to TNS. Swansea entertain Briton Ferry Llansawel and Barry head to Aberystwyth.

There’s a big top-two battle in store in the North East Wales League.

Leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads U19s host unbeaten Northop Hall in the pick of the matches. Coedpoeth United go to Wrexham Foresters Reserves.

North East Wales recreational league: Deeside Dragons v Mynydd Isa; Halkyn Utd v Corwen; Cei Connah v Hawarden Park.
