Xabi Alonso will hold talks with Cole Palmer after the Chelsea star's dismissal against Tottenham left his manager demanding greater maturity and facing a selection blow for Wednesday's Carabao Cup showdown with Liverpool.

Palmer collected two yellow cards in fewer than 10 minutes as Chelsea suffered a 2-0 derby defeat.

Mike Penders had already scored an own goal on his first Premier League start before Mathys Tel sealed Tottenham's victory with a fine solo effort.

Palmer will now miss the last-16 trip to Anfield, having signed a new long-term Chelsea contract earlier this month.
