Mike LaFleur was noncommittal, but Cardinals reportedly expected to keep starting QB Gardner Minshew after win over Cowboys

Mike LaFleur isn’t ready to commit to a starting quarterback just yet, even if his backup just led them to a wild overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur opted to bench Jacoby Brissett for Gardner Minshew on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium, a decision that eventually led to their 33-30 overtime win against the Cowboys.

While the expectation is that Minshew will remain the team’s starter moving forward, according to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, LaFleur declined to commit to that when asked directly on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m just excited about this win right now,” he said, via ESPN.

Though LaFleur was vague, Minshew should get the start against the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday unless something changes in the next few days.

Jacoby Brissett started for the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium, but struggled to get much of anything going in the first half. Dallas jumped up 17-3, and Brissett went just 10-of-23 for 119 yards with an interception.

So with just a few minutes left in the third quarter, LaFleur benched Brissett in favor of Minshew. He ended up throwing for 188 yards and three touchdowns and leading the team to their overtime win. Kicker Chad Ryland drilled a 42-yard field goal in the extra period to seal the three-point victory.

"He did a good job," LaFleur said of Minshew, via ESPN. "Obviously extended a few plays, stuff like that, but I thought his timing was great. I mean he's had a lot of success in this league and he's about as resilient as they come, too. If you ask Gardner Minshew, he's ready at all times. I thought the guys made some plays for him and he was getting the ball out of his hands."

Minshew is in his eighth season in the league this fall. The former Washington State standout signed a one-year, $5.75 million deal with the Cardinals this past offseason to back up Brissett following a short stint with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

Minshew’s best campaign came in 2023 with the Indianapolis Colts, when he threw for a career-high 3,305 yards and 15 touchdowns to earn Pro Bowl honors.

Brissett is in his second season with the Cardinals. He went 1-11 as a starter last season, and threw for 3,366 yards wiht 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Cardinals hired LaFleur to take over for former head coach Jonathan Gannon this past offseason.

The win on Sunday moved the Cardinals to 3-5 on the season. They’ve won two of their last three, which included an 18-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Though switching quarterbacks provided the Cardinals the spark they needed to mount the comeback on Sunday, LaFleur knows their issues weren’t simply limited to that position. They have much bigger problems at hand.

"It was a collective deal," LaFleur said. "I need to be better with our scheme, obviously. I need to be better with our playcalling and all of us need it. We got a lot to fix right now and I don't want this last 30 minutes or 35 minutes to mask the stuff that we need to fix on offense because I know we're a lot better than that. I know we can execute better than that."
