Sunderland supporters call for 'urgent meeting' after controversial Newcastle United decision

A Sunderland supporters group want answers following a statement released by Newcastle United concerning the upcoming Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

Sunderland and Newcastle United supporters are seeking clarity after a controversial decision to cut away allocation and implement a ‘bubble’ travel arrangement for the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park on December 6.

Sunderland’s away allocation has been reduced for the second successive season to just 2,200, with Newcastle confirming in an official statement away supporters would have to travel to St James’ Park from Wearside and back via club coaches. This comes following a decision by the Safety Advisory Group on the recommendation of Northumbria Police.

The announcement was met with backlash from both sets of supporters. Sunderland supporters group Red & White Army branded the decision an ‘absolute disgrace’ while Newcastle fan group Wor Flags were critical of the ‘pathetic’ decision to reduce the away allocation. However, no decision has been made regarding the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in May 2027.

SAFC supporter statement

After the Red & White Army statement calling for greater transparency was backed by supporters from both sides, a follow-up statement with requests has now been published.

Red & White Army wrote: “Following our statement yesterday, we are encouraged to see supporters of both clubs aligned in their views on the proposed bubble arrangement for travelling supporters attending the fixture at St James' Park.

“In light of this clear supporter sentiment, we now call for: The publication of the full minutes from the 'extraordinary' SAG meeting at which the recommendation to implement a bubble was made.

“An urgent meeting involving supporter organisations from both clubs, all key stakeholders who attended the SAG meeting and representatives from both SAFC and NUFC.

“Justification as to why the away allocation has been further reduced.

“The level of opposition from supporters of both clubs should leave no doubt that this proposal has failed to command confidence by those most affected by it. Transparency, accountability and meaningful engagement must now replace closed-door discussions and unexplained recommendations.”

SAFC call for clarity

Sunderland Football Club has also requested greater clarity and transparency over how the decision was made.

An official club statement read: “Whilst we do not agree with the decision that has been reached, we recognise that this decision will disappoint many supporters who would prefer to make their own travel arrangements,” the Sunderland statement read. “While respecting the SAG’s decision, we have sought clarity on the revised risk assessment and requested transparency as to how the end decision has been made.

“We will continue to work closely with our fan groups through the Supporter Collective to ensure supporters’ concerns are represented and considered across all aspects of the decision, including travel, ticketing and other matchday arrangements. Despite the outcome, we remain committed to making the process as straightforward as possible and delivering an enjoyable and memorable experience for all supporters attending the fixture.”
