Ben Duckett rescued England from capitulation as his fifth one-day century helped them to 241 all out against Pakistan as they try to revive their tri-series campaign.

A third successive defeat would not quite end England’s bid to reach next weekend’s final but they are running out of road after stumbling to 19 for three when Harry Brook ran himself out in Lahore.

Duckett put on a restorative 93 with Sam Curran, the only other top-eight batter to go past 14 with 42, and went on to register his second century in Lahore, having made 165 against Australia in last year’s Champions Trophy.

Duckett apart, it was a poor batting display, with Tom Banton and Joe Root miscuing to fielders in the ring off Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi before Brook, fresh from his record-breaking double century against Sri Lanka, was about a foot short of his ground attempting a second run.

Jordan Cox then gave lone slip Babar Azam catching practice as England lost their fourth wicket before the end of the powerplay against a Pakistan side clad in pink to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Duckett rebuilt alongside Curran, the pair blunting Pakistan’s spinners but Arafat Minhas, England’s tormentor in Rawalpindi, was held back until the 29th over with two left-handers at the crease.

Afridi broke an obdurate stand by bouncing out Curran, who hooked to Salman Agha, while ODI debutant Razaullah took an outstanding one-handed grab low to the ground for his maiden wicket to see off Will Jacks for 13.

Duckett went to a 104-ball century but he top-edged a sweep off Arafat to depart for 104, only for some lusty hitting from Gus Atkinson, who belted three sixes in his 36 not out, to swell England’s total.

England debutant Henry Crocombe was last man out as Afridi finished with four for 46.
