Patrick Mahomes is closing in on the record for most TD passes in a QB’s first 10 years

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is three touchdown passes away from the NFL record for the most ever in a player’s first 10 seasons.

Mahomes, who is in his 10th NFL season, has 325 career touchdown passes, counting the playoffs. Only Peyton Manning, who had 327 touchdown passes in his first 10 years in the league, has had more.

So if Mahomes throws for two touchdowns on Sunday against the Jets, he’ll tie Manning’s record. With three touchdowns, Mahomes will have the record all to himself.

As a rookie, Mahomes played in only one game and didn’t throw any touchdowns. In the eight and a half seasons since then, Mahomes has 279 touchdown passes in the regular season, and another 46 in the playoffs.

Once Mahomes breaks the record, he’s likely to own it for a long time. The only active quarterback who’s closing in is Josh Allen, who is currently in his eighth NFL season and has 260 career touchdown passes. Allen has a chance of throwing for 68 touchdown passes in the next year and a half and moving ahead of Manning, but he’s highly unlikely to finish next season ahead of whatever Mahomes’ total is by the end of this season. This is a record Mahomes will own for a long time.
