Championship side Newcastle Thunder have confirmed the exit of head coach Graham Steadman after two seasons with the club.
The Castleford Tigers legend initially arrived in the North East on an interim basis, but ended up taking a permanent role as part of the partnership between Thunder and the York Knights.
After finishing the 2025 season rock bottom of League One, the side made a dramatic rise, mostly due to the partnership but also because of his coaching. They ended 2026 second in the Championship, and made it to the semi-finals before losing to Doncaster..
The club set an all-time record under his tutelage, scoring over 1000 points whilst conceding an average of just 12.58 points per game.
His exit is expected to pave the way for a new boss, with LoveRugbyLeague reporting that another ex-Castleford man will take the reins. Craig Huby is expected to land his first senior head coach role heading into 2027.
Commenting on Steadman’s exit, Newcastle Thunder CEO Richie Metcalfe said: “I want to personally thank Graham for his outstanding contribution to the club.
“He took on the challenge head-on and led us to unprecedented success on the pitch this year. His vast experience and high standards have fundamentally improved our squad, and he leaves Newcastle Thunder in a much stronger position than when he arrived.
“We are hugely appreciative of his hard work. The 2026 season will live long in my memory, and I am proud to have worked alongside such a dedicated and humble person in Graham Steadman, not just as a coach but as a friend.”
