At the start of the fourth quarter on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos trailed by 11 points and were in critical danger of falling behind three games in the AFC West divisional race. But after outscoring the Kansas City Chiefs 15-0 in the final frame, they were able to hand their rival a second straight loss in a row via a 4th & goal stop on the six-yard line and secure the lead in the division.
The Chiefs had a chance to walk off with a game-winning touchdown, initially facing4th & goal on Denver's one-yard line with four seconds remaining. But a false start blew the play dead that otherwise would have ended with a quick slant pass for a score. Then, with the ball moved back five yards, the Broncos came up with a crucial sack to end the game and earn the AFC West lead.
"We put the game in the hands of our Defense again, and they got one-yard close, but we got the stop," said Broncos quarterback Bo Nix after the game.
With the win, the Broncos avenged a 21-point loss to the Chiefs in Week 1 and extended their winning streak to four games. Now, the AFC West lead is securely in their grasp.
Meanwhile, after an undefeated start to the season through five games, the Chiefs have now been handed back-to-back losses. This is only the third time Patrick Mahomes has lost in his career with a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.
