Kyrie Irving thoughtfully explained how gambling could influence his retirement decision

Kyrie Irving is closer to the beginning of his career than the end, but if he decides to call it quits sooner than later, it won't be because the nine-time all-star lost his ability to play.

Irving, 34, was recently asked how much longer he wants to go, and the 15-year veteran gave a thoughtful answer about his longevity being tied to his love for the NBA -- which isn't as strong as it used to be for several reasons, including the growth of sports betting.

"Basketball is an eternal flame, but in terms of the NBA schedule and things of that nature, I think you got to be in love with that too," Irving told reporters. "The weight lifting, the unseen hours, media prep, just going in and being ready to play at a high level. And also, you have social media and gambling right now, which is just running rampant. And it's not the same NBA that I fell in love with as a kid, and I'm very much aware of that."

Irving shouted out the longevity of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, James Harden and Kevin Durant for their longevity, but said "I don't see myself playing in the NBA at 42, 43."

"I love the playing, I love the competition, but do I love all the hoopla that goes into it," Irving said. "The next generation is looking at it. They're making money younger, addictions are running rampant. I just think I'm fully aware of just my position, and my purpose is bigger than just playing in the NBA."
