Scarlets player ratings as thrilling backs answer Wales selection questions

Every Scarlets player rated out of 10 in the comprehensive European win over Newcastle Red Bulls

There were some excellent Scarlets performances against Newcastle

The Scarlets started their European campaign with a 47-14 victory over Newcastle Red Bulls at Parc y Scarlets.

Here's how the players rated...

15. Blair Murray - 8

Early in the first-half, he stepped his way through Newcastle's line when he had no right to find a gap. Always a threat with ball in hand, beating eight defenders. Favourite for the Wales full-back jersey this autumn.

14. Ellis Mee - 9

Set his stall out by regathering the first kick-off, with the Wales wing busy throughout. Nearly got on the scoresheet after latching onto Davies' cross-field kick, then created the Scarlets' fourth try when nothing was seemingly on.

Got the try he deserved in the second-half. A frontrunner to start for Wales this autumn.

13. Joe Roberts - 7

Very solid in defence, while there was a superb jackal penalty in the first-half. Lovely break in the build-up to Macs Page's first score.

12. Johnny Williams - 7

Carried well, while showed his soft hands on occasion. On hand to finish off the Scarlets' third try. Perhaps surprising to see him replaced so soon in the second-half.

11. Macs Page - 9

Marked his 50th appearance with not one but two tries. Had looked full of confidence before that, with some trademark elusive runs and one bone-crunching tackle. Could not have done any more to earn a place in the Wales squad.

10. Sam Costelow - 7

Opened the scoring by splintering the Newcastle defence to score. Shame to see him depart in the first-half, having been working so well on the front-foot.

9. Gareth Davies - 8

In his 19th season as a professional and still producing quality performances. Played his part in the Scarlets' first two tries before crossing for his own at the end of the first-half.

1. Kemsley Mathias - 6

Gave up a couple of penalties and slipped off five tackles, but solid enough otherwise in anchoring the scrum.

2. John McKee - 7

Lineout wobbled a bit at times, but the Irish hooker got through a lot of work. Bit overeager and loose at times.

3. Harri O'Connor - 6

Decent enough shift from the tighthead up front, although he missed a few tackles.

4. Harvey Cuckson - 6

Replaced at half-time, but made a fair share of tackles in the first 40.

5. Alex Groves - 7

Great angle in the build-up for Williams' score. Really put himself about.

6. Sam Lousi - 7

Great lineout steal midway through the first-half. Bettered it with a quality pull-back pass for the Scarlets' third score. A class act as always.

7. Josh Macleod - 9

Had a field day at the breakdown against this Newcastle attack, while he led the tackle count The Scarlets' best player on the pitch as he stated his case for Wales selection. Departed late with injury, though.

8. Fletcher Anderson - 8

Back in the starting side for the first time this year and did exactly what you'd expect of him. Carried strongly and often, offloaded well and tackled plenty.

Replacements:

16. Ryan Elias - 6

Got through plenty of work in 14 minutes, being second only to Macleod in tackles per minute and first in carries per minute, before being forced off injured.

17. Sam O'Connor - 5

Pinged on one occasion, with little else to say.

18. Gabe Hawley - 6

Made his tackles during his cameo.

19. Taine Plumtree - 7

On at half-time and nearly got on the scoresheet within minutes. However, he couldn't hold on when looking to regather a loose ball near the line. Still, a very lively return to the side after injury.

20. Dan Davis - 7

Not on for a massive amount of time, but threw himself into some tackles as he added late energy

21. Dane Blacker - 6

On for the final quarter. Solid enough in his time on the pitch.

22. Joe Hawkins - 8

On earlier than expected. Lovely floated pass off the left hand for Mee's score, before a delicate grubber for Page's first. Controlled matters well.

23. Eddie James - 6

The Wales centre was brought on early in the second-half. Didn't carry as much as you'd expect.
