‘I’m Drafting One of Those QBs’ — NFL Analyst Pushes Chargers To Consider Trading Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers are the only winless team in the NFL heading into Week 8, thanks to an underperforming offense that has cost them in crucial moments.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh had hoped for a quick turnaround after bringing in Mike McDaniel as the team’s new offensive coordinator in January. However, things haven’t gone as planned, and the Chargers currently rank last in the NFL in scoring, averaging just 15 points per game.

Quarterback Justin Herbert isn’t looking to blame McDaniel. He believes the offensive unit is responsible for failing to make plays. As the Chargers return from their bye week, Herbert offered a brief assessment of the team’s struggles.

Long known as an offensive mastermind, McDaniel has struggled since taking over as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator.

The team’s 0-6 start has been marked by multiple issues, from a struggling passing game to inefficiency in the red zone. The running game has also struggled to consistently create offense, although the Chargers are averaging 4.2 yards per carry through six games.

“Responsibility, yeah, I’m fully responsible. Who else is going to lead the direction of the offense? I spend zero time trying to avoid blame. It’s quite the opposite,” McDaniel said during a Chargers press conference earlier this month.

Meanwhile, while reflecting on the team’s record and its preparations during the bye week, Herbert took full responsibility for the offensive struggles.

“It’s not his fault. It’s our fault as an offense. We have to do our job. It’s not Mike’s fault. The guys are open. Plays are being made. It’s on us to run, to block, to catch, to throw. It’s on us as an offense,” Herbert said during Wednesday’s press conference.

Meanwhile, Coach Harbaugh has reiterated that McDaniel will remain the team’s offensive play-caller and expressed confidence in his decision-making.

Herbert, too, has struggled with consistency. He is going through one of the toughest stretches of his career, completing just 59.4% of his passes for five touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also been sacked 21 times in just six games.

The team has also suffered significant personnel losses, with starting left tackle Rashawn Slater and center Tyler Biadasz both placed on injured reserve.

Five-time Pro Bowl safety Derwin James Jr. hasn’t played since Week 3 because of a hamstring injury. He did not practice on Wednesday after suffering a setback in his rehabilitation, and Harbaugh said injured reserve is a possibility.

The Chargers are currently ranked No. 28 in PFN’s NFL Team Impact Rankings, with a grade of 66.4. They will next face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
