Oklahoma QB commit Jamison Roberts stays silent on Ben Arbuckle news

One risk of firing a coach is losing any recruit they are connected to. That is what the Oklahoma Sooners are going through, as reports say offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle is no longer with the program.

Under Arbuckle's watch the last two seasons, the Sooners have put out two of the worst offenses in college football. It got even worse this year, as Oklahoma ranks No. 111 in total offense, No. 66 in passing offense, No. 128 in rushing offense and No. 109 in scoring offense. The news was reported Monday after the Sooners lost 42-25 to the South Carolina Gamecocks, falling to 4-4.

Now, Oklahoma must keep offensive players committed to the program. That includes Jamison Roberts, who is a four-star, top-six quarterback in the 2027 class. He's committed to the Sooners. When asked about the Arbuckle firing, Roberts elected not to comment.

“No comment at this time," Roberts said via On3.

Roberts' silence leaves some uncertainty surrounding his recruitment as Oklahoma begins searching for a new offensive coordinator. The four-star quarterback committed to the Sooners under Arbuckle's leadership, making the coaching change an important development in his recruitment. While his lack of comment does not necessarily signal a change in his plans, Oklahoma will need to assure him everything will be fine during the transition.

The next offensive coordinator will have an important role in keeping Roberts committed and convincing him that Norman remains the right place to develop his game. Oklahoma has invested heavily in rebuilding its offense, and retaining a highly rated quarterback in the 2027 class would be an important step. The Sooners cannot afford to let the coaching change create further uncertainty within their future quarterback room.
