SWPL round-up as Rangers stay top as Celtic win big

It keeps their 100 per cent record firmly intact and keeps them three points clear of Celtic. It also sets them up for an intriguing midweek card as they travel to Petershill to play Glasgow City on Wednesday night.

Laura Berry had opened the scoring at Broadwood before Katie Wilkinson netted an audacious effort from just inside Hibs’ half. Jodi McLeary added a third on the hour mark before Wilkinson netted her second and Rangers’ fourth.

Hibs tried to rally with Kyah Simon netting before Jasmine McQuade scored a second deep into added time. By that stage, Rangers were playing with ten as Gry Boe Thrysoe had to go off with an injury and all substitutes had been committed.

“I thought we were first class,” said Rangers manager Leanne Crichton. “We wanted to make sure there was an intensity in our play coming off the back of that international break.

“Losing Gry towards the tail-end makes it a little bit more interesting just when you take that player out, and it becomes 11 v 10.

“The scoreline probably makes it look quite respectable in terms of the play. We probably could have shown a little bit more maturity in certain moments to try and stop that from happening, but overall, I’m really pleased.”

The Rangers manager was also effusive in her praise of Wilkinson, last season’s top scorer in the league. Her first goal was exquisite before she netted again with a trademark free-kick.

“I think she shows two moments of magic today and there was real awareness in terms of the first goal,” said Crichton. “It was a moment of brilliance again and you can wax lyrical about that.

“Then the second for her in terms of the free-kick is again a moment of beauty. She practises them all the time and we know she's got that in her bag.”

Celtic hammered Aberdeen 6-0 to make it back-to-back league wins for Grant Scott’s side, who will now look to this week’s game against Hearts.

Chloe Craig got them up and running before Maria McAneny netted the first of her brace. Katie O’Hanlon put the ball into her own net before McAneny’s second of the day.

Evie Rabjohn got the fifth, and her first Celtic goal, with Morgan Cross marking her return to action with the sixth. Aberdeen remain rooted to the foot of the table and are now the only team in the league without a point to their name.

For Scott, though, it was all about getting the points.

“I was delighted with it,” he said. “We asked the players at half-time to be a bit more intentional about what we were doing.

“We wanted to be on the front-foot and I thought we did that. We didn’t actually start particularly well and we were a wee bit untidy but you could see the players settling into the game.

“We had to change our shape a little bit at the start of the season but players are coming back from injury now. When you see these players coming in, hopefully we will see the rewards of having the full squad available.

“We are just looking for that little bit of fluency but I think it will come.”

Glasgow City beat Motherwell 3-0 at Petershill, with Yuuka Kurosaki netting the opener and Kelly Brady adding a brace. The victory leaves City seven points behind Rangers.

“It was important coming off the international break that we got going again,” said striker Abi Harrison. “We have a quality squad and we have had people away on the international break but everyone played their part and hopefully the manager has a bit of a headache now ahead of Wednesday night.”

Hearts remain in third place, five points behind Rangers, after thumping Partick Thistle 6-1. Carly Girasoli opened the scoring for Hearts before Keri Halliday doubled their advantage.

Erin Rennie scored Hearts’ third before Thistle pulled one back through Abby Robinson. Kayla Jardine's effort from distance gave Hearts a fourth shortly after the restart before Halliday added her second of the day.

Carly Johns rounded it off with the sixth.

At the bottom end of the table, Montrose got their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Spartans, a result that lifts them three points clear of Aberdeen. Hannah Stewart, Demi Taylor and Jade McLaren were all on the scoresheet.
