Leicester City headed into the Luton Town game off the back of consecutive victories.
Russell Martin’s side were full of confidence after beating Bromley 4-0 in midweek, but it was another step backwards on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road.
Leicester weren’t helped by the poor officiating, as the referee disallowed what looked like a legitimate goal, missed a blatant penalty and sent off John Lundstram for a perfectly good tackle.
Despite that, City still have to take accountability for their own mistakes, and there was one glaring error made by Caleb Okoli, which now exposes a huge issue that Martin must address immediately.
TalkingPoints
Leicester concede in the 95th minute to lose 2-1 to Luton 💔 What did you make of that performance?
Caleb Okoli has flattered to deceive since arriving in a £12.5m move from Serie A side Atalanta two summers ago.
Okoli has proven to be very error-prone at Premier League, Championship and now League One level, with the constant theme being his inability to play out from the back.
The Italian looks so uncomfortable on the ball, and against Luton, he was caught in possession and was punished by Nahki Wells.
As seen by his Sofascore statistics below, Okoli lost possession a quite staggering nine times and made seven inaccurate passes.
Martin hauled Okoli off at half-time and must surely recognise that he’s simply incapable of operating in his system, which requires the centre-backs to play out from the back.
Martin now has a selection dilemma at centre-back as he must decide who should start in place of Okoli against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.
If he wants to continue with the three-at-the-back formation, he has a choice between Luke Thomas and Ilari Kangasniemi.
Kangasniemi has only played 49 minutes of football since arriving from FC Inter Turku, although he has impressed on international duty with Finland’s under-21s.
So, now may be the time to hand the 19-year-old his first Foxes start, and it couldn’t be a better fixture on paper than Wigan, who sit rock bottom after eight defeats in 11 games.
