Goals from Jack Grimmer and Fred Onyedinma helped the Chairboys respond after defeat to Luton last week.
The result was also the first home league win for Wycombe this season, and Hounsell felt the preparation of the past seven days paid off.
He said: “We knew we had a good week on the training pitch, we’ve got real quality in the squad. We talked about elements of the performance being good last week.
“The first half I felt was close to being a complete performance, although I’m glad we got the goal because we wouldn’t have got the reward we deserved.
“I’m glad the skipper, Grimmer, got the first goal. He’s a big reflection on what we’re trying to achieve.
“We made five changes, I’ve always said we’ve got strength in depth. I’m really pleased for the players that came in.
“Clean sheets are going to be so important for us, it builds the foundations for really solid results.”
Notts County remain joint bottom and manager Martin Paterson admitted his side have struggled since promotion.
He said: “The jump up in level looks like we’re struggling at the moment, and I have to find a way.
“We had a game plan but we looked a bit disjointed. As coaches and managers, these are the moments where you’ve got to stand up and correct these moments.
“I have to look at it and front up. But what I will say is that when the ball drops in the middle of the park, I can’t accept people not challenging.
“What I make of it is, at the moment – we’re not good enough. We’re not good enough to come here and win the game with the way we’ve played.
“I could fluff it in another way, we could prepare with a different team, but no excuses.
“I dare say that although I said we weren’t good enough, there was a period for 20 minutes where we’ve got to score. We were good enough in that period.”
The home side got their breakthrough just two minutes before the interval.
Grimmer fired home from 20 yards to add to his consolation effort last week.
Josh Scowan’s curling shot in the 72nd minute was turned away well by James Belshaw as Wycombe looked hungry for a second.
After being second best in the game for so long, Notts County visibly went up a gear and showed much more intensity.
However, any thoughts of a late comeback were dashed four minutes from time – a Caolan Boyd-Munce corner was flicked on by Daniel Harvie for Onyedinma to head home.
