Premier League predictions: Villa to test Man City and Maresca’s perfect run
Premier League predictions: Villa to test Man City and Maresca’s perfect run

The Opta supercomputer has delivered its match predictions ahead of the latest weekend of the 2026-27 Premier League season.

With seven wins from seven, Manchester City sit top of the Premier League table and are the only team left in the competition yet to lose a game this term after their 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Everton were beaten by Chelsea, and Brentford suffered a late loss to Liverpool as their unbeaten starts came to an end, while there were also first wins of the campaign for Fulham, Bournemouth and Tottenham.

Reigning champions Arsenal edged past Nottingham Forest to stay three points behind City, and Brighton continue to impress after their 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace, but Michael Carrick and Manchester United are coming under increasing pressure.

But who can make moves up the table this weekend? Matchday 8 sees fixtures take place across Friday, Saturday and Sunday in another bumper weekend.

Ahead of what should be another exciting group of Premier League fixtures, let us check out the Opta supercomputer's match predictions.

IPSWICH TOWN V NOTTINGHAM FOREST

The action begins at Portman Road on Friday, as Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest look to get back to winning ways.

Forest have lost their last three Premier League games, more than they had in their previous 14 (W5 D7 L2), and have drawn a blank in four different matches this season, including last time out against Arsenal.

Ipswich won their first two Premier League games against Forest in the 1992-93 season, but they have since lost all four against them, though our predictive model suggests they will end that run, with a 43.2% win probability.

Forest, who have a 30.1% chance of victory, won 4-2 on their last visit to Ipswich in 2024-25, but have not won on consecutive league visits since 2010-11 and 2011-12 in the Championship.

At 26.7%, this is one of the most likely draws of the weekend, though, so a stalemate could be on the cards.

ASTON VILLA V MANCHESTER CITY

Onto Saturday, Aston Villa will be the next team to try to end Manchester City's perfect start, after Enzo Maresca made history last weekend by becoming the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a club.

City could become the eighth side to win each of their first eight games of an English top-flight season, after Everton in 1894-95 (first eight), Sheffield United in 1903-04 (eight), Tottenham in 1960-61 (11), Manchester United in 1985-86 (10), Liverpool in 1990-91 (eight), Chelsea in 2005-06 (nine), and Liverpool in 2019-20 (eight).

And with a 43.2% win probability, they are the most likely away winners of the weekend.

However, City – who thrashed AEK Athens 5-1 in the UEFA Champions League in midweek – have lost their last two league games against Villa, last losing three straight between August 1962 and September 1966.

Villa, whose win probability sits at 31.6%, are unbeaten in their last three home league games against sides starting top of the table (W2 D1), while they are in good form, having won two of their last three league games (D1) and beaten Viking 3-1 in the Champions League.

ARSENAL V EVERTON

Arsenal will be waiting to pounce on any potential Man City slip-up, so they will be determined to walk away with three points against Everton.

Arsenal, who battled back to draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich in their European outing, won 69.6% of the supercomputer's simulations, making them the most likely winners of the weekend, and they are also unbeaten in their last seven league matches against Everton (W5 D2).

The Gunners have won 11 of their last 12 Premier League games (L1), winning all six at Emirates Stadium in that run, while their defensive record continues to impress; no side has conceded fewer league goals than them (five), while they have also faced fewer shots on target (21) and have a lower expected goals against figure (5.6 xGA) than any other side.

Everton were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea last time out to end their unbeaten start and are winless in their last eight away league games (D5 L3), with all three on the road this season ending level.

They have a 17.1% chance of claiming a point and a further 13.3% likelihood of winning, but have won one of their last 30 away Premier League matches against Arsenal (D5 L24), a 1-0 victory in 2020-21 under Carlo Ancelotti.

COVENTRY CITY V FULHAM

Alvaro Arbeloa's long wait for a league win is now over after Fulham (29.9%) beat Hull City last time out, with Coventry City (43.4%) next up for them.

This is just the third-ever top-flight meeting between the sides – they met in the 1967-68 season, with the Cottagers unbeaten in both fixtures (W1 D1).

The Cottagers are winless in their last eight away league games, alternating between a draw (four) and defeat (four) each time. They lost their last such match 2-1 to Ipswich, and at 26.7%, this is the other most likely stalemate of the weekend.

Coventry have lost five of their seven Premier League games this term (L2), their most defeats at this stage of a campaign since 1996-97 (also five). They avoided relegation on the final day of that season.

CHELSEA V TOTTENHAM

Saturday rounds off with Tottenham looking to build on their win over Coventry against Chelsea, who recorded their first clean sheet of the season against Everton.

The Blues are heavy favourites at 53.6% and have won each of their last six league matches against Spurs, their joint-longest winning league run against them (also six between January 2000 and March 2002).

Chelsea have only lost one of their last 16 London derbies in the league at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs have lost each of their last six derbies in the competition – they have never lost seven straight before.

Monday's victory was huge for Spurs, and it was just their fourth of 2026 in the Premier League. Since the start of last season, only twice have they won consecutive league matches.

They are given a 22.6% chance of victory against Chelsea (and a further 23.8% hope of clinching a draw), and have won on just one of their last 36 league visits to Stamford Bridge (D11 L24).

That was a 3-1 victory in 2017-18 under Mauricio Pochettino, and they have only picked up two points in eight visits since then (D2 L6).

CRYSTAL PALACE V NEWCASTLE UNITED

Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are looking to get back to winning ways at Selhurst Park, with Pierre Sage, in particular, feeling the pressure.

Palace were thumped 5-0 by Brighton last weekend, though they are favoured to pick up three points on Sunday, with a 40.5% win probability to Newcastle's 32.8%.

The Eagles are looking for consecutive league wins over Newcastle for the first time since a run of three between August 1971 and September 1972, and the Magpies have won on just one of their last 11 top-flight trips to Selhurst Park (D6 L4).

Palace have not had much home joy recently, but they are looking for back-to-back Premier League wins on home soil for the first time since April 2025 (three straight).

And that is coupled with Newcastle's away-day blues; they have lost 4-1 at both Leeds United and Coventry in their last two away Premier League games. Only between January and March 2008 have they lost more consecutive away games by at least three goals in the competition (four).

HULL CITY V BRENTFORD

Last weekend was disappointing for Brentford (38.1%), who suffered their first league defeat of the campaign and finished with nine men, but they will want to bounce back against Hull City (35.8%).

This is the first-ever top-flight meeting between Hull and Brentford, with the Bees seeking their first Premier League win in Yorkshire (D4 L1).

Hull are winless in their last five games (D3 L2) after starting the season with back-to-back wins, but they are also unbeaten at home in the league this term (W1 D2).

They will have hope of finding their next win even if they go behind, though, as Brentford have dropped 11 points from winning positions, the joint-second-most from a side's first seven matches of a campaign in the Premier League.

Keith Andrews' side will be looking to Igor Thiago to provide the attacking spark; he has six goals in his last six Premier League appearances against newly promoted clubs.

LIVERPOOL V BRIGHTON

It has been a good week so far for Liverpool, who followed up that win over Brentford with a stunning comeback triumph over Villarreal in the Champions League, but they face another tough test against Brighton.

The Seagulls head into the weekend sitting third, having won each of their last four matches by an aggregate score of 15-0, and they have also won two of their last three Premier League matches against Liverpool (L1).

Despite that run, they are given a 26.8% win probability on Sunday – only marginally higher than the 26.4% chance of a draw – with Liverpool the outright favourites at 46.8%.

However, the Reds are winless in their last five home Premier League matches (D4 L1), only twice having worse runs at Anfield (seven – November 2002 to February 2003, and eight – December 2020 to March 2021).

Brighton's attack is sure to cause problems – they are the highest scorers with 23 goals – but Alexander Isak will be keen to test their defence, too. He has scored five goals in his last five Premier League appearances, as many as he scored in his previous 20 combined for Newcastle and Liverpool.

MANCHESTER UNITED V BOURNEMOUTH

Carrick is feeling the heat at Manchester United, and they are in desperate need of a Premier League victory when they host Bournemouth, who won for the first time in the league under Marco Rose last time out.

United have seven points from seven games this season (W1 D4 L2), their worst start to a league campaign since 1989-90 (also seven in seven). And things got even worse on Wednesday as they were thumped 4-1 by Como in the Champions League, extending their winless run across all competitions to seven games (D3 L4).

Things may not get any easier here; they are winless in six against the Cherries, who are unbeaten on their last three league visits to Old Trafford (W2 D1).

United are still backed to come out on top by the supercomputer (48.5%), with Bournemouth given a 25.7% chance of another away victory against the Red Devils.

Carrick's side have drawn their last three league games, their longest such run since five straight stalemates between September and October 1992 – there is a 25.8% chance of a draw on Sunday.

SUNDERLAND V LEEDS UNITED

The weekend finishes at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland and Leeds United both look to end their respective winless streaks.

Sunderland sit bottom of the table and have lost their last four Premier League games, last enduring a longer such run in December 2015 (four), and they are narrow favourites, winning 38.8% of the pre-match simulations.

In fact, they have won just four points in seven league games this season (W1 D1 L5), their lowest at this stage of a league season since 2016-17, when they were relegated.

As for Leeds, they have only lost on one of their last eight top-flight visits to Sunderland (W6 D1), going down 2-0 in November 2001, but they have never won a Premier League game in the 16:30 kick-off in eight attempts (D3 L5).

They are given a 34.7% chance of ending that run against Sunderland, but there is also a 26.5% chance of a draw – a result Leeds are increasingly familiar with, given they have drawn more Premier League games in 2026 than any other side (13), including a 1-1 stalemate with Man Utd last weekend.
