The writing is on the wall for Michael Carrick.
Despite coming into Manchester United in January and leading them to a UEFA Champions League spot, the Red Devils’ boss has overseen a complete collapse since permanently taking the reins at the football club.
After a midweek 4-1 loss in Italy against Como, Carrick needed a performance from his players on Sunday. Something for fans to believe in.
Against Bournemouth, he got none of that, with United faltering to a 0-3 defeat at Old Trafford, as goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson saw the Cherries run rampant.
Former teammate of Manchester United boss Carrick, Gary Neville, had his say post-match on Sky Sports.
Neville, who played over 600 times for United in a long career, said, “The Manchester United fans are singing the Michael Carrick song because I think they know what’s going to happen here. They’ve seen this before.
“He’s one of their own and he’s popular.
“But the owners, the sporting department and the players are not popular and they’ve badly let this football club down.
“Those two [Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox] tomorrow are probably going to make a decision that will disgust Manchester United fans, but it’s probably necessary.
“It’s just an absolute mess.”
Neville is right – Carrick’s short spell in charge of the football club is seemingly over already.
While the problems at Manchester United run far deeper than the head coach, the easiest thing for senior figures at the club to do is sack Carrick.
The Red Devils are on their worst start to a season in 40 years, slumped down in 16th place after eight matches.
United have won just the singular game in the Premier League, as no side have a wins record worse at this current stage.
Michael Carrick is likely the next head coach on the chopping block at Manchester United. It’s hard not to feel for him.
