Celtic hero Guidetti delivers brutal Celta Vigo verdict
Celtic hero Guidetti delivers brutal Celta Vigo verdict

Former Celtic favourite praises the Parkhead atmosphere but believes Celta Vigo have the stronger team.

John Guidetti has delivered an intriguing verdict ahead of Celtic’s Europa League meeting with Celta Vigo, suggesting the Spanish side have the stronger team but admitting there is something special about European nights at Celtic Park.

The former Hoops striker knows both clubs exceptionally well. And while his assessment of their respective strengths might raise a few eyebrows among Celtic supporters, his admiration for the Parkhead atmosphere remains unmistakable.

Guidetti makes his feelings clear

Speaking to Spanish radio station A Penaltis, in comments reported by the Daily Record, Guidetti declared: “Celtic’s affection is impressive. European nights in Glasgow are different.”

He then delivered the part of his assessment that Celtic supporters may find rather less flattering, suggesting Celta possess the stronger squad while acknowledging the extraordinary backing the Scottish champions enjoy.

It is an interesting distinction from a player who experienced the passion of the Celtic support first-hand.

But football matches are not decided on reputation or paper comparisons. Celtic Park on a European night has a habit of making supposedly superior opponents uncomfortable.

A Celtic career that promised so much

Guidetti arrived on loan from Manchester City in 2014 and quickly became a supporters’ favourite under Ronny Deila.

Eleven goals by November had Celtic fans dreaming of a permanent deal. His confidence, personality and goalscoring instincts made him one of the most talked-about players at the club.

There were memorable European moments too, including his dramatic goal against Inter Milan in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Celtic Park.

Yet the early momentum disappeared. His goals dried up, and despite considerable enthusiasm among supporters, his Celtic career ended after just one season.

He subsequently joined Celta Vigo, where he developed a lasting affection for the club and the city.

One regret that still haunts Guidetti

The Swede also reflected on his departure from Vigo, admitting he considers leaving the Spanish club the biggest mistake of his career.

His decision was driven by his ambition to represent Sweden at the World Cup, but it is clear that his time in Spain left a lasting impression.

Celtic have the perfect opportunity to respond

Guidetti might believe Celta have the superior players. That is his opinion, and he is entitled to it.

But Celtic supporters know better than most that European football is about far more than individual quality.

Passion, belief, intensity and a stadium capable of lifting its players can change everything.

Guidetti remembers that atmosphere. Now Celtic have the opportunity to remind him exactly why it matters.
