Tennessee Softball Legend Monica Abbott to Serve as Homecoming Grand Marshal

One of the most accomplished athletes in Tennessee history is returning to Rocky Top for a special role in this year’s Homecoming celebration. Former Lady Vols softball pitcher Monica Abbott will serve as the grand marshal for Tennessee’s 2026 Homecoming parade on Friday, Nov. 6. The parade is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in front of Fraternity Park and travel along Volunteer Boulevard before ending near Neyland Stadium. 

For Abbott, the opportunity brings her back to a campus where she built one of the most decorated careers in college softball history. “What a great honor,” Abbott told . “It’s not every day you get to do that.”

A Dominant Career on Rocky Top

Abbott played for Tennessee from 2004 through 2007, establishing herself as one of the most dominant pitchers the sport has seen.

During her four seasons with the Lady Vols, she compiled a 189-34 record, a 0.79 ERA and 2,440 strikeouts. She also threw 23 no-hitters, including six perfect games, and recorded 112 shutouts. Abbott helped take Tennessee to three consecutive Women’s College World Series appearances from 2005 to 2007. In her final season, the Lady Vols reached the championship series and finished as national runners-up.

Her individual honors reflected that success. Abbott was a four-time first-team All-American and All-SEC selection. She earned SEC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2004, 2005 and 2007, sharing the award in 2005. In 2007, she was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year and won the Honda Award for Softball. Tennessee retired her No. 7 jersey in 2013. 

A World Record and Continued Tennessee Ties

Abbott’s success continued after her time on Rocky Top. She won two Olympic silver medals with Team USA and a gold medal at the 2010 World Championship. She also previously held the Guinness World Record for the fastest softball pitch after throwing 77 mph during a professional game in 2012. Another Tennessee pitcher, Karlyn Pickens, has since taken the record; Guinness lists her fastest pitch at 79.4 mph in 2025. 

Abbott has remained connected to the sport as a college softball commentator and analyst for ESPN and the SEC Network. She also founded the Monica Abbott Scholarship, which supports multisport female athletes who demonstrate leadership in the classroom and on the field.  Homecoming week runs from Nov. 1–7 and concludes with Tennessee hosting Kentucky at Neyland Stadium. 

The grand marshal role will give Tennessee fans another chance to celebrate a player whose accomplishments helped shape the Lady Vols softball program.
