Under-recruited DE keeps East Kentwood rolling in MHSAA playoffs
East Kentwood players celebrate a 49-21 win over Brighton in a Division 1 district semifinal on Saturday, Oct. 31.

KENTWOOD — The methodical machine known as East Kentwood football kept chugging toward its ultimate goal.

Falcons senior quarterback Colin O'Connor, in complete command, and senior wide receiver Steph Jones dissected Brighton's defense in a MHSAA football Division 1 district semfinal on Saturday, Oct. 31, leading to a 49-21 East Kentwood win. The Falcons, 10-0 and ranked No. 2 in Michigan, advances to next weekend's district final against undefeated Grand Ledge.

O'Connor completed 20 of 24 passes for 257 yards and five touchdowns. Jones, a Grand Valley State commit, hauled in eight catches for 137 yards and four touchdowns. East Kentwood scored on all but one offensive possession, with the outlier ending on a fumble that likely would have been overturned if replay review existed at the prep level.

"[Colin] has been spot on all year," East Kentwood coach Ty Spencer said. "He's a very underrated player in this state. He's making plays day in and day out against great competition. ... Steph Jones is just a phenomenal playmaker for us. We said we need to get the ball in his hands as much as we can and we did."

O'Connor, in his first year starting as the replacement for current MSU quarterback Kayd Coffman (who, with the Spartans off this week, was in attendance), immediately got the fireworks started with a 46-yard completion to Zeke Ferrell on the game's third play. A few plays later, he delivered a strike to Jones over the middle while taking a hit for the Falcons' first touchdown of the day.

East Kentwood's defense forced a turnover on downs, and then O'Connor hit Jones on a pivot route for a 6-yard touchdown to cap off a 16-play drive. The Falcons converted a fourth-and-11 on the drive with O'Connor ripping a pass down the seam to tight end Kinyonn Battle.

"I could not have imagined this going any better," O'Connor said of stepping in as the starter this season. "I've had the best time with these guys and I get put in amazing positions by our coaches."

Brighton, running strong, answered with the first of two touchdowns from junior running back Dominic Nauss to make it 14-7 East Kentwood at halftime.

East Kentwood's defense forced a three-and-out to open the second half, and the Falcons scored four plays later, with O'Connor finding Jones behind the safeties for a 31-yard touchdown.

"It was really the first possession, seeing how they were going to play me," Jones said, for the key to his big day. "I had a lot of double teams throughout the season. So just seeing that and going back to the drawing board and working up the double moves."

After Nauss' second touchdown, East Kentwood's defense ratcheted up the intensity. Nearly half of the defensive starters recorded a tackle for loss, while defensive backs Major Barnes and Austin Nelson picked the ball off.

Nelson, a top junior in Michigan, finished with a sack on a corner blitz, another tackle for loss, an interception where he wrestled the ball away from the Brighton receiver and multiple pass breakups. In consecutive plays, Nelson broke up a quick out, snuffed out another quick out before dropping back and almost making a play on a deep shot, and then finally jumped a route for his fifth interception in 10 games.

"They just kept going quick game," Nelson said. "It got me a couple of times, but I was ready. On the last one, I just had to wrestle it away. It was a smart play, a thinking play."

Another impact player on the defense was senior defensive end Alijah Bondon, who may be Michigan's most under-recruited senior defensive lineman. Bondon recorded a sack and multiple pressures while lining up all game against Brighton left tackle Jack Carlson, who's headed to Michigan State.

"He knew I had a good speed rush so he was taking away my speed on the outside," Bondon said. "And I just had the better inside move. I already had a rush plan and it set me up well."

East Kentwood did not skip a beat in its playoff opener after going undefeated in a tough OK-Red Conference and winning every regular-season game by at least three touchdowns. The Falcons, who reached the state semifinals in 2025, are primed for another deep run.

"We've got to keep winning with our preparation," Spencer said. "Grand Ledge is a great team. They've got some good athletes and we are going to have to respond like we always do."
