How humble Harry Kane - the best footballer on Earth

It is a sight that sums up the England captain.

After becoming the first British player in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or, the most prestigious honour in football, family man Harry Kane celebrated by dancing with his mum at a London nightclub.

He and his parents Kim and Patrick, both in their 60s, and devoted wife Kate joined other relatives and friends at Soho's exclusive Cirque Le Soir to mark the pinnacle of Harry's career.

And how they partied. Harry, 33, and his mum clutched shot glasses, while others raised bottles of Dom Perignon champagne to the star striker.

Those who know the Kanes say his parents' pride 'knows no bounds'.

And on Monday night at the London Palladium, they beamed with joy as they watched their son lift the coveted trophy.

Harry saw off competition from 2018 World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe – who was just 19 when he scored four goals for France in the tournament – and Spain's Lamine Yamal, who had boasted that he deserved the award because of his World Cup and La Liga wins this year.

Harry, who left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in 2023 in a £100million deal, was presented with the award by Brazilian footballer Ronaldo.

His speech – just under nine minutes long – left many close to tears.

Looking over at his parents, Harry, who was dressed in a tuxedo from British tailor Thom Sweeney, said: 'Mum and Dad sitting there as well. What a moment. All those years, the sacrifice, the support you gave me, the times taking me to training, coming to watch me play.'

He added: 'It was always about learning, and all those traits you have given me that have allowed me to be successful and be here tonight. I love you. Thank you.'

Harry went on to thank former coaches and managers, including Harry Redknapp and Jose Mourinho, but also paid tribute to lesser-known figures who guided him in his early days and developed his talent.

He acknowledged his England teammates, with whom he reached the semi-final of this summer's World Cup, saying: 'We had a special year. It wasn't the perfect year, but we had a lot of good moments.' There were also plaudits for England boss Thomas Tuchel and Harry's Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany, who is recovering in hospital after collapsing at the team's training ground last week.

And, of course, there was a tribute for Kate, Harry's childhood sweetheart.

They met at primary school in Chingford aged just nine and went on to marry in 2019. They have four children – daughters Ivy, nine, and Vivienne, eight, and sons Louis, five, and Henry, three.

'To my wife, Kate, my best friend,' Harry said. 'You're my biggest supporter. You always want the best for me, you sacrifice yourself to help me achieve my dreams... it wouldn't be possible without you.'

Dedicating the award to Kate, 33, who looked glamorous in a black, floor-length gown by Hugo Boss, Harry added: 'This is a trophy that we celebrate, not me. This is me and you... I just want to say thank you. I love you.'

Those who know the couple say that Kate is key to her husband's success. 'Kate is understated and puts Harry's football ahead of any fame or attention,' says a source.

In a 2017 interview, Harry told of how happy he was that he'd met his wife at such a young age.

'If I was single now and meeting people, you'd never know if they were with you for the right reasons. Is it the money? You'd never really know. So I'm lucky that I've got a childhood sweetheart.'

'Harry has never forgotten his roots,' says a friend. 'He and Kate have a couple of mansions now, but they are so down to earth, it's lovely.' An exemplary role model, Harry also had inspiring words for young fans in Monday night's speech.

'Anything is possible with hard work when no one is watching,' he said. 'To go through the ups and downs, to learn through resilience, determination and self-belief.'

But the award may not be the last honour for Harry this year. Asked about a knighthood for the footballer, the Prime Minister did not rule it out.

Andy Burnham said: 'Harry Kane has given an enormous amount to English football, and this is a very special moment for him and the country.'

Arise, Sir Harry? It couldn't happen to a more deserving man.
