New Zealand made a flying start to their five-match T20I series against India with an explosive batting performance in the opening encounter at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, India struggled to contain the hosts, who piled up a massive 225/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Glenn Phillips led the charge with a blistering unbeaten knock and produced a remarkable reverse shot off the final delivery to give the innings a spectacular finish.

The moment arrived on the final ball of New Zealand’s innings when experienced Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled to Phillips. Having already dominated the Indian attack, the right-handed batter produced an outrageous reverse-sweep-style shot that left the fielders with little chance of stopping it. Phillips anticipated the line perfectly before switching his stance and connecting cleanly with the delivery.

He directed the ball over the extra-cover boundary for four, bringing the New Zealand innings to a memorable close. The audacious stroke underlined Phillips’ confidence and ability to improvise against even the most experienced bowlers. The boundary also took New Zealand to 225/4, their highest-ever home T20I total against India, while ensuring that Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 off just 40 deliveries.

New Zealand’s innings began with an aggressive opening partnership between Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. Allen smashed 45 off 24 deliveries, while Seifert contributed 24 from 17 balls to give the hosts early momentum. After the openers departed, Phillips took control of the innings and kept the Indian bowlers under pressure. His unbeaten 82 featured eight fours and three sixes, combining powerful strokeplay with clever improvisation.

Daryl Mitchell provided useful support with 28 runs, while Bevon Jacobs added a quickfire 31 off just 16 deliveries. Their contributions helped New Zealand maintain an impressive scoring rate throughout the innings and cross the 220-run mark. India’s bowling attack endured a difficult outing, with Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav picking up one wicket apiece. Axar conceded 51 runs, Arshdeep gave away 45, and Mayank finished with figures of 1/40. Bhuvneshwar, meanwhile, went wicketless and conceded 49 runs in his four overs.

India face a daunting target in Christchurch

With 226 runs required to win, India faced a challenging task in their pursuit of a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The visitors needed to maintain a high scoring rate while ensuring that they did not lose wickets in quick succession. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson looked to provide an aggressive start to the chase, putting pressure on the New Zealand bowlers during the early overs.

However, Phillips’ explosive innings and his spectacular finish had already given the hosts a commanding total to defend. New Zealand would look to capitalise on their strong batting performance and secure victory in the series opener, while India needed a substantial contribution from their top order to chase down the target.
