Jaylen Brown responded to the claim that he demanded a trade from the Boston Celtics after the Philadelphia 76ers came back to beat the Indiana Pacers 114-109 in Indianapolis on Wednesday night.
The claim came from Brian Scalabrine, a former Celtics big man and current NBC Sports Boston analyst. On Monday, he said on his SiriusXM show: “My understanding of this thing is that he (Brown) demanded to be traded. Not through the media, but to the organization.”
By the time Brown was asked about it two days later, his camp had already denied the report, and Scalabrine had walked back his comment a bit as well.
Brown was asked about Scalabrine’s comments after the game, and the 2024 NBA Finals MVP spoke about the analyst before getting to the accusation.
“I guess it is what it is. I saw that. I saw Scal has made some comments. I’ve never had any issues with Scal. I love Scal. But I guess he’s doing what he has to do. I understand why he feels the need to do that,” he said.
Then, the 76ers star went after the claim itself.
“But I have no interest in letting any false allegations follow me in my next chapter here in Philadelphia. I never demanded a trade,” Brown said. “I never made a list of ultimatums or the sort. None of that is true.”
Besides the rumors of a trade, Scalabrine had also claimed that Brown had a “list of demands.”
“My understanding is that Jaylen Brown went to the organization and had a list of demands, and it was like, ‘You either do this, or you trade me.’ And he was rooting to get traded to Milwaukee,” Scalabrine said.
A representative for Brown told ESPN on Monday that the report of a trade demand or a list of demands was “10000% a lie.”
Scalabrine backed off on the same day he made the claim, before the Celtics hosted the Chicago Bulls, explaining that his wording had gone wrong, adding, “So technically, he did not demand to be traded…”
The claim comes nearly four months after Philadelphia landed Brown this past offseason, sending Paul George and draft capital to the Celtics. On the court, meanwhile, Brown had a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double against the Pacers. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 27 points, and the win moved the 76ers to 4-1.
