The Chairboys secured their first victory over the Magpies County in any competition since December 2016 and their first home win against the visitors since November 2007 thanks to goals from captain Jack Grimmer and Fred Onyedinma.
After a dominant first-half display, Wycombe took a deserved lead on 44 minutes when Grimmer found the net with a low deflected drive, after some great build up work from Dan Harvie and Cauley Woodrow.
The hosts remained in control for much of the contest before Onyedinma sealed the three points with a late header in the final five minutes.
Speaking after the game, Hounsell was delighted with both the result and the manner of the performance.
He said: “It was a really professional performance and the best possible response we could have given.
"I thought we were outstanding in the first half and I'm thrilled to come away with a clean sheet and our first home league win of the season.
"We had a very good week on the training pitch and we know the quality we have in the squad.
Last week there were parts of the performance that were good, but we were punished for some poor decision-making. I'm delighted with how the players responded."
Hounsell felt the opening 45 minutes were among the strongest his side have produced this season.
He added: “I genuinely believe the first half was as complete a performance as we've produced.
"They didn't have a touch in our box or a shot on target. The only frustration would have been not getting our reward earlier."
Wanderers look comfortable until the last 15 minutes when County began to press and had several decent chances, mainly through forward Daniel Kanu.
But the game, and points, were sealed in the final few moments.
Hounsell said: “There was a spell in the second half where we lost a little bit of control, but that's natural.
"We hadn't won at home in the league and the players were desperate to keep a clean sheet.
“What pleased me was how we regained control and finished the game strongly."
Up next is Cambridge United away on Tuesday night.
