Marink Reedijk says Hibs deserved a draw against Celtic

Marink Reedijk was disappointed not to take anything from the game, as Hibs fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Celtic at Easter Road this afternoon.

Hibs got off to the perfect start with Owen Elding opening the scoring inside the first two minutes with an excellent finish after Joe Newell’s quick free-kick.

The lead did not last long, however, with Celtic equalising moments later from a corner, before Camilo Durán put the visitors in front just before half-time.

Speaking to Hibs TV after the match, Reedijk admitted that he thought the performance level deserved more.

He said: “I think we deserved at least a draw. I saw a team who wanted to play in the right moments but also stayed together when we faced difficult moments in the match. That was really good, although I’m disappointed with the loss.

“I think we need to continue in this way because we made Celtic’s life difficult today.”

The Hibs manager was disappointed with the timing of the goals  conceded – although he admitted there were positives to take from the 90 minutes.

He added: “Those were bad moments. When you work hard, come out of the dressing room with that intensity and take the initiative to score the opening goal, you want to keep that 1-0 lead for longer.

“Ideally, I wanted to keep it until the end of the match, but that didn’t happen.

“However, what I really liked was how we responded after the equaliser, and also how we came out of the dressing room in the second half after conceding just before the break. Those were positive signs.

“Instead of crumbling, I saw a team who kept fighting and believing. I think we had more in our locker today than just this 2-1 defeat.

“This is what decides matches. I don’t think Celtic’s goal for 2-1 came from a big chance, but their player (Duran) scored a fantastic goal.

“We had better chances, but one was cleared off the line, and we also mishit the ball. This is where we can improve and where we need to improve. However, we’re creating those moments, and that’s important because it would be much more worrying if we weren’t creating chances at all.

“Eventually, the ball will fall in the right direction. For me, the most important thing is that I can see improvement compared to the weeks before. I keep repeating myself, even though the results aren’t there, because I genuinely see that progress.

“Don’t forget that Celtic are a very good team with good individual players, but they didn’t create a lot here until we started to become a little more opportunistic. We had enough chances against a very good team to get a different result today.

“When I look at the performance, I think we were Celtic’s equals today. As a team, I think we were better, while individually, they were better. If we keep building on this, we will get somewhere.”
