Here's another bye week roster move from the New Orleans Saints. NewOrleans.Football's Mike Triplett reports that the Saints have released veteran cornerback David Long Jr. from injured reserve. Releasing him now frees up resources for the training staff to devote to other players as they recover from injuries, while giving Long the chance to play again in 2026.
Long, 28, was a third-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams back in 2019. He's bounced around the league ever since and joined the Saints in time for their final preseason game in August, but started the regular season on injured reserve. Now that he's been released, he can sign with another team and continue playing or wait at least three weeks and re-sign with New Orleans, likely on the practice squad.
He's the latest Saints player to be let go with an injury settlement; the others have each caught on with new teams. That group includes rookie defensive end Michael Heldman, still with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad; running back Audric Estime, on the Cleveland Browns' 53-man roster; and running back Devin Neal, on the Washington Commanders practice squad.
Another group of Saints players remain out for the season due to injuries suffered at training camp or in the preseason games: defensive lineman Bryan Bresee, offensive lineman Dillon Radunz, running back Ty Chandler, tight end Moliki Matavao, and cornerback Rejzohn Wright. A couple of others are eligible to return from injured reserve later this season -- wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is the biggest name, but look out for running back Travis Etienne Jr. and left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. to return to action soon, too.
