It is time for the start of the Rick Stockstill era with the FSU Seminoles. Florida State is set to play the Boston College Eagles on Saturday on the road, their first game since firing Mike Norvell.
Stockstill has been on FSU's coaching staff since 2024, when he returned to Tallahassee as the program director of scouting for offense after 18 years as Middle Tennessee State's head coach. He played quarterback at FSU from 1977-81, finishing his career with 250 completions, 2,834 passing yards, and 26 passing touchdowns.
With FSU moving on from Norvell, he provides some veteran leadership for a program that he loves and he is excited to lead.
"I'm humbled, I'm honored to be here and I'm gonna bust my tail," he said in his introductory press conference. "I'm gonna bust my tail to give this program everything I have and everything we have. To make Coach Bowden and to make all the former players, the administration, our leadership, to make them proud of Florida State football."
Boston College (4-4, 2-3 ACC) will be a tough test for FSU (3-5, 1-4), which is looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Seminoles are the more talented team and do have several advantages that should allow them to win the game, snapping their 12-game road losing streak.
While the Seminoles lead the all-time series 16-6, Boston College won the last meeting 28-13 back in 2024. FSU has won the past three games in Alumni Stadium and is 9-3 all time on the road.
Here are our predictions for FSU's game against Boston College.
It just feels like it's FSU's time to finally get a win on the road. Boston College is up and down this season and presents the best possible chance to get a win. The Eagles won't wow you on either side of the ball, and it'll be Rick Stockstill starting 1-0.
This game will be pretty tight throughout, but I feel Florida State will be able to take advantage of the terrible red zone defense of Boston College and be able to pull away in the second half.
Florida State has enough offensive firepower to keep this close, but the Seminoles’ turnover issues are difficult to ignore. Ashton Daniels has thrown 11 interceptions, including three against Clemson, while BC’s run-heavy approach is well suited to attack an FSU defense that has struggled to get off the field consistently. FSU has also lost three straight entering the game and is navigating a coaching transition, while Boston College is 4-4 and playing at home. I expect a competitive game, but I trust the Eagles slightly more to avoid the costly mistakes that have repeatedly hurt Florida State.
FSU's first game under interim head coach Rick Stockstill will be on the road, but the Seminoles have a great shot to snap their road losing streak. I'm expecting the Seminoles to come playing harder and more motivated, picking up a win over a struggling Boston College team.
