Luis Enrique insisted "no result from the past will help" Paris Saint-Germain defeat Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Two-time defending champions PSG have made a blistering start to their European campaign, winning all three games and scoring 14 goals to sit top of the league phase.

After starting with a 6-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava, PSG defeated both Manchester City and Barcelona 4-2 to once again highlight their dominance on the continental stage.

PSG are unbeaten in their last 13 games in the competition (W9 D4). Should they avoid defeat against Villarreal, they will equal the longest unbeaten run by a French side in European Cup/Champions League history (14 games by Lyon – December 2004-March 2006).

However, Luis Enrique has warned his side they must still earn victory against Villarreal amid their recent form.

"If you think that with the results we've had since the start of the season, we'll win the match [against Villarreal], you're mistaken," said Luis Enrique.

"It's impossible if we don't have the ambition, the quality, and the intention to run the entire match.

"We'll see Villarreal's qualities; they're a very good team. They've had a difficult schedule with four very high-level opening matches. They're a very good team.

"We have to show in the first few minutes that we have ambition. No result from the past will help with the match."

This will be the first meeting between Villarreal and PSG – the only previous occasions that Villarreal have faced the reigning Champions League winners in the competition were in 2008-09, when they drew 0-0 home and away against Manchester United.

Since Luis Enrique took charge, PSG have gone unbeaten in their four Champions League away games against Spanish teams, winning three of them (D1).

Prior to his arrival, the French side had only won two of 12 away games against Spanish opponents in the competition (D3 L7).
