South Africa and Australia meet at Newlands from Tuesday in the third Test of their series. The ground has hosted many memorable matches between them, and here are five.
Australia had won the first six Tests at Newlands. In January 1970, South Africa won by 170 runs under Ali Bacher, who was making his debut as captain. Eddie Barlow made 127 in the first innings, his fifth Test century and his fourth against Australia.
South Africa made 239 and 473, and Australia replied with 382, which included an unbeaten 138 from Adam Gilchrist. Shane Warne took 6-161 in South Africa’s second innings. Australia chased 331 on the final day and won by four wickets, with Ricky Ponting unbeaten on 100.
After bowling Australia out for 209, South Africa made 651, with AB de Villiers on 163, Ashwell Prince on 150 and Jacques Kallis unbeaten on 102. Paul Harris took 6-127 in Australia’s second innings of 422, his best figures in Tests. That innings included 123 not out from Mitchell Johnson, his first Test century. South Africa won by an innings and 20 runs, and Harris was named Player of the Match.
Australia led by 188 on first innings after South Africa were bowled out for 96, with Shane Watson taking 5-17. Vernon Philander, on his Test debut, then took 5-15 as Australia were bowled out for 47, their lowest Test total in 109 years. Morné Morkel took 3-9. A total of 23 wickets fell on the second day. Hashim Amla made 112 and Graeme Smith 101 not out as South Africa chased 236 to win by eight wickets on the third day.
South Africa set Australia 430 to win. Australia went from 57-1 to 107 all out, losing nine wickets for 50 runs. Morné Morkel took 5-23 and was named Player of the Match, Keshav Maharaj took 2-32 and Kagiso Rabada 1-63. South Africa won by 322 runs. The Test is also remembered for Sandpapergate, the ball-tampering scandal, which led Cricket Australia to ban Steve Smith and David Warner for one year and Cameron Bancroft for nine months.
