Viktor Gyokeres eyeing Arsenal January exit after Gunners' transfer pursuit

Viktor Gyokeres has struggled to find his footing in Mikel Arteta's Arsenal set-up over the past 12 months, with his future at the Emirates Stadium now under serious doubt as January transfer talk intensifies

Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly keen to leave Arsenal due to a lack of first-team opportunities. The Swedish frontman was the subject of intense speculation in north London last summer, with the Gunners eventually wrapping up a £63.5million agreement with Sporting CP for the 28-year-old following a lengthy and protracted transfer saga.

Yet Gyokeres has found it difficult to establish himself in Mikel Arteta's system over the past 12 months, with his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium now under serious scrutiny. This season, Gyokeres has been restricted to a mere 56 Premier League minutes in total, and has unsurprisingly failed to register a single goal or assist despite his endeavours.

Arsenal also devoted considerable energy towards landing Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez during the summer window, only to come away empty-handed owing to the La Liga outfit's firm refusal to sell combined with the Argentine forward's preference to join Barcelona instead.

With the Madrid club making clear they have no intention of selling their prized asset to their Catalan rivals, and with Alvarez's relationship with the Atletico faithful somewhat strained following his Camp Nou ambitions this summer, Arsenal could be well-positioned to make a renewed push for the striker come January.

That would also all but cement Gyokeres' standing at his current club, with Alvarez likely to spearhead Arteta's attack upon his arrival given the substantial fee Atleti would demand for his services.

According to TEAMtalk, Atletico Madrid also remains a possible destination for Gyokeres should he depart Arsenal. The La Liga outfit expressed an interest in the striker during their meetings with Andrea Berta over the summer, with discussions over a potential deal for Alvarez also regularly featuring in those conversations.

However, a number of other clubs across the Premier League, Italy and Germany are also keeping tabs on Gyokeres, meaning Arsenal could face a hectic period when the transfer window swings open again at the start of 2027.

Despite shining in the Nations League with Sweden, netting four goals in four appearances throughout the recent international break, Arteta continues to place his trust in Kai Havertz as a false-nine rather than handing Gyokeres the opportunity to lead the line.

That's also despite Gyokeres' track record for thriving on English soil. The striker racked up 43 goals and 17 assists for Coventry City between 2021 and 2023 before securing his move to Sporting.

There, he enjoyed a further 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 games before landing in North London last summer.

Whether the Gunners boss deviates from his current approach or gives Gyokeres the chance he deserves on paper when Arsenal make the trip to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday, 18th October, remains to be seen.
