Flyers’ Season-High 6 Goals Lead Them Past Mammoth on Sunday

Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, Noah Cates, Christian Dvorak, Oliver Bonk, and Cole Knuble scored for the Flyers. Dmitri Simashev, Mikhail Sergachev, and Logan Cooley scored for the Mammoth.

The first period opened with 10 minutes of the Mammoth hemming the Flyers in the defensive zone. Utah is a very fast skating team, and a very hard one to apply pressure on. With the exception of a good shift from Travis Konecny and the Flyers’ top line, it was hard to generate much offense.

A bit of puck luck helped the Flyers take a 1-0 lead with a Michkov goal, but that same puck luck led to Dmitri Simashev tying the game for the Mammoth. After the first period, it was a 1-1 game, but the Flyers were fortunate it was not worse. Between two power-play chances for Utah and goalie Dan Vladar being peppered with pucks, it could have been much worse. Instead, the game went into the first intermission tied at 1, with Utah leading the shot battle 9-7.

Two early second-period goals for the Flyers from Travis Konecny and Noah Cates helped give the Flyers a firm hold on the game in the early half of the period. After a first period which saw the ice tilted in the Mammoth’s favor, the Flyers flipped it with more than half of the game to play.

The Mammoth upped the pressure, but were unable to score before the second period came to a close. Philly outshot Utah 9-5 in the period to take the overall 16-14 shot lead into the second intermission, looking to close it out in the third.

The Flyers got a much-needed 4th goal to extend the lead to three goals with Christian Dvorak joining in on the fun. Oliver Bonk tacked on another as the Flyers took firm control of the game in the early half of the third period.

It was not smooth sailing on the way to the final horn for the Flyers, as Mikhail Sergachev and Logan Cooler scored consecutive power-play goals for the Mammoth late in the period. However, the Flyers closed out the game with an empty-net dagger from Cole Knuble, sealing the 6-3 victory.
