Chelsea could look to strengthen their attacking options in 2027 as Xabi Alonso considers bringing one of his former favourites to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are continuing to build under the Spaniard, who enjoyed considerable success at Bayer Leverkusen before taking charge in west London.
Reuniting with players who understand his tactical approach could help accelerate his project, although Chelsea may face a difficult task convincing a Premier League rival to part with one of its prized assets.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are interested in Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz, with Alonso reportedly keen to work with the German international again in 2027.
The pair enjoyed an outstanding spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, where Wirtz established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking midfielders. His performances played a significant role in the club’s Bundesliga title triumph in 2024, making him a natural target for Alonso as he looks to shape Chelsea’s future.
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth around £116million. However, the 23-year-old has struggled to reproduce his best Bundesliga form consistently since arriving at Anfield, prompting questions about his adaptation to English football.
That has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea, with Alonso potentially believing he could help his former player rediscover his best form.
However, there is a significant obstacle to any potential move. According to the report, Wirtz has no intention of leaving Liverpool for either Chelsea or Bayern Munich, despite the interest in his services.
Liverpool are also determined to retain the midfielder and remain confident he can fulfil his considerable potential on Merseyside.
His contract runs until 2030, putting the Reds in a strong negotiating position and making it difficult for Chelsea to force a deal, particularly given the substantial fee Liverpool paid to sign him.
Alonso’s existing relationship with Wirtz could give Chelsea a compelling argument if the midfielder’s circumstances change. The pair already know how to get the best out of each other, potentially making Stamford Bridge an appealing destination further down the line.
Nevertheless, Chelsea would need Liverpool to soften their stance and the player to reconsider his reported commitment to Anfield before a transfer could become realistic.
For now, the Blues’ interest appears to be a long-term possibility rather than a deal close to completion. Much could depend on Wirtz’s performances over the coming months and whether he eventually becomes unsettled at Liverpool.
