Celtic suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Benfica as Martin O’Neill’s side were brutally exposed in another miserable Champions League performance.
The Hoops were all over the place defensively, with individual mistakes gifting the Portuguese side opportunities they were only too happy to punish. Celtic showed flashes of attacking promise, but the damage had already been done.
Camilo Duran was one of the few Celtic players to emerge with any credit, while several of his teammates endured a night to forget in Lisbon. And let’s be honest, Benfica didn’t get out of second gear.
Here are our Celtic player ratings from the 4-1 defeat to Benfica.
Sinisalo had no chance at Jhon Duran’s cheeky chipped penalty. Beat at his far post again for Benfica’s second and what was he doing for the Portuguese side’s third?? Made a daft mistake that almost gifted a fourth. Once again left flat-footed for Benfica’s fourth.
Has filled in well for Alistair Johnston this season but against Benfica, this was a bridge too far for young Donovan. Could do nothing for the three goals. Worked tirelessly for Celtic for the 90 minutes.
A nightmare start for Murray who conceded a penalty in the first three minutes with a silly mistake as he dithered over the ball in Celtic’s penalty area. Looked out of sorts after that. An improved second half but the damage was already done.
Struggled from the kick off and was weak at Benfica’s third. How could Trusty not close down the space? The US defender was the most experienced in the Celtic backline but showed no leadership to Donovan or Murray.
Tierney struggled to apply his usual attacking endeavour against Benfica but the Celtic defender did a decent job defensively despite the first half horror show. The Scotland defender won plenty of duels and had a decent defensive game all things considered.
The Celtic captain struggled in the first half but McGregor settled in as soon as Oxlade-Chamberlain came on. Spent most of the first hour chasing shadows as the skipper’s struggles in Europe continue.
Showed instant endeavour after Celtic went 1-0 down as Baur looked to push the Bhoys on for an equaliser. His Benfica performance was a far cry from his MOTM outing against Motherwell but the German is still showing signs he could be an important player for Celtic this season.
Game passed Sorensen by. Was largely anonymous for the vast majority of the first half. The second half was not much better. A night to forget for Sorensen.
Gave the ball away a few times in the first 15 minutes as Tounekti once again struggled on the big occasion. Lost his runner for Benfica’s second goal. Why O’Neill persists with the Tunisian is beyond me. Hooked at half time. Not surprised. Needs dropped permanently.
Offered good support to Colby Donovan as Duran was forced to defend more than he attacked. Unlucky not to close the 2-0 gap as his curling effort crashed off the Benfica bar in the 28th minute. Did well to take his headed goal to make it 3-1. Hit the post in the second half too.
Was unlucky not to equalise after Celtic went 1-0 down as Hogh had his shot well saved by the Benfica goalkeeper. He did well to get on the end of a few crosses considering the lack of service. Replaced at half time.
Given the impossible task to get Celtic back into the game at 3-0 down. Unlucky not to score early in the second half. Osmand was a thorn in Benfica’s side. Should have scored with 10 minutes to go to make it 3-2 but fluffed his lines. Should have passed to Duran?
Showed some intent where Tounekti didn’t as Hassan threatened the Benfica full back as soon as he entered the pitch. Created Duran’s goal to make the score look at least respectable. Caused the home side plenty of problems. Surely must be the first name on O’Neill’s teamsheet moving forward.
Replaced Sorensen in the 57th minute and Celtic looked more solid in the middle of the park. Oxlade-Chamberlain brought a semblance of calm to the Hoops midfield. Must start from now on.
Got 30 minutes to try and get Celtic back into the game. Nygren failed to do anything of note.
Lotomba replaced Donovan in the 77th minute and made a crucial interception with his first contribution in the game.
