Detroit Lions player Jack Campbell was taken off the field on a stretcher after sustaining a neck injury during a tackle
The All-Pro linebacker, 26, will remain hospitalized overnight for evaluation and monitoring after the fourth-quarter injury
“He’s a husband and a father. We’re praying for him and hoping he’s gonna be alright,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff said after the game
Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was taken off the field on a stretcher after sustaining a neck injury during a tackle.
During Detroit’s home game against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field on Sunday, Nov. 1, the All-Pro player, 26, went in for a tackle against Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson during the fourth quarter.
Footage from the game shows Campbell’s head snapping back during the maneuver, before landing face-down on the field. The linebacker was on the ground for several moments before medical personnel came to his aid and eventually placed him onto a backboard and then onto a cart to be taken off the field.
During the incident, Campbell’s teammates could be seen taking a knee as he was treated for his injuries, and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was in tears while the game was paused, per USA Today.
The Lions organization shared in a social media post after the game that Campbell was resting and “will remain in a local hospital tonight, for continued evaluation and monitoring.”
During a post-game conference, head coach Dan Campbell also shared that the team didn’t have any further information about the linebacker’s condition.
“We’re thinking about him,” the coach added.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff also spoke out after the harrowing incident, telling USA Today that the injury was “definitely scary and just brings you back to reality for a moment.”
“He’s a husband and a father. We’re praying for him and hoping he’s gonna be alright,” Goff added. “If I know anyone that’s tough enough to get through something like that, it’s gonna be him.”

Despite the incident, Detroit won the game with a score of 19-15, improving the team’s record to 5-2, while the Vikings’ record dropped to 6-1.
Two other Lions players were injured during Sunday’s matchup. Pass rusher DJ Wonnum and safety Brian Branch both suffered concussions earlier in the game, per ESPN.
Campbell, who played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2019 to 2022, was drafted by the Lions with the No. 18 pick in 2023.
Last season, Campbell became the first NFL player in seven years to have 150-plus tackles and at least five sacks and three forced fumbles, and was selected as an All-Pro. Also that year, the Lions signed Campbell to a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2030 season, according to ESPN.
