Patrick Smith-Young injury update: Duke football safety exits NC State game

RALEIGH, N.C. — Patrick Smith-Young exited the second quarter of Duke football's road game at NC State.

The safety's right ankle appeared to get rolled up as he collided with Evan Smith while trying to tackle Victor Snow.

Smith-Young sat upright while being tended to by trainers, who applied an air cast before the medical cart came out. Smith-Young's teammates, along with some NC State players, surrounded him as he was taken off the field. He gave a thumbs up as he was carted off with cheers from the crowd.

Smith-Young transferred to Duke from North Texas ahead of the 2026 season. He has 23 total tackles on the season and an interception – which sealed the win against Virginia on Oct. 23.

The Wolfpack punted the ball away four plays after Smith-Young went down. Duke leads 24-7 in the final minute before halftime. Nate Sheppard has rushed for two Blue Devils scores and now owns Duke's single-season rushing touchdown record and has back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
