Double Rugby World Cup winner Kwagga Smith has left Japanese club Shizuoka Blue Revs after both sides agreed to end his contract.

The 33-year-old Springboks star spent eight seasons in Japan, where he became a fan favourite.

His sudden exit has now sparked talk of a possible return to South Africa.

Club releases statement

In an official statement, Shizuoka Blue Revs confirmed that Smith had left by mutual agreement.

The club thanked the flanker for his service since joining in 2018.

Smith had become a key player during his time in Japan, earning plenty of praise for his performances.

The club also wished him well for the next stage of his career.

Springboks star linked with return home

Smith is still recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out of action for the Springboks this year.

Head coach Rassie Erasmus has already suggested the 33-year-old is unlikely to feature in November's Nations Championship matches.

But Smith could now be heading home.

According to Planet Rugby, the Bulls are interested in signing the experienced forward.

A move would see Smith return to South African club rugby after eight years in Japan.

The move would also reunite Smith with Johan Ackermann, his former coach at the Lions.

However, Smith has yet to confirm where he will play next.

With the 2027 Rugby World Cup less than a year away, Springboks fans will be hoping he can return to full fitness and get back on the pitch.$
