Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne reacts to 2-0 home win over Folkestone Invicta in National League South

Tonbridge Angels boss Alan Dunne felt his team deserved their win over Folkestone on Tuesday night.

There were few chances at either end but a late double by Angels substitute Frankie Baker ensured a 2-0 win in National League South.

“They're a team that have got real firepower,” said Dunne. “Knowing Jay Saunders, the respect I’ve got for Jay, we knew it would be a real difficult game and I'm not saying that lightly.

“They are very good tactically. We knew they would know a lot about us as well so we knew it would be even harder because they would know the weaknesses in our armoury.

“But I felt we dealt with it well. We controlled the first half with the ball, just didn't have enough end product.

“But second half, we made two changes. I felt like we needed a bit of physicality in the box up there and a bit of pace down the sides. In the second half, we were good for it.

“Once we got the first, I thought we'd be okay. We still had a spell in the second half, as they left four up at times at corners and stuff.

“We knew that we'd have to defend for our lives and I think I was more pleased with the last 10 minutes, the defending, the blocking, putting their bodies on the line is what I'm about and what I had a career doing.

“That was more pleasing to me than the actual goal because defending is what we love doing.

“I felt we were good for it against a difficult side, so I'm pleased with the three points and the clean sheet.”

Dunne praised the impact of Baker in the second half with the forward unfortunate not to start.

He likened the finish for his first goal to that of former Premier League forward Jamie Vardy.

“He's a threat all the time and I'm working with him tirelessly on his game,” said Dunne. “There’s different areas of the game he can improve.

“But it was a real Jamie Varley finish, wasn't it, on the shoulder and getting clear. He's a nightmare to play against and I'm lucky to have him.

“I'm glad he got his two goals tonight because he was disappointed not to start.”

Dunne admitted his team had to dig deep during stoppage time before they broke away to score a second goal with virtually the last kick of the contest.

“It was a long five minutes in my life,” Dunne said about the added time. “I think I aged a lot!

“But you've got to make big saves and make big blocks in those areas.

“It just shows desire. It shows your team-mate that you want to win and I want that from the players - I want that spirit.

“I've got full respect for Jay. He's part of the reason why I got this job. He helped me and put a good reference in for me.

“I've got a lot of respect for him but tonight it was all about us and what we did.”
