Los Angeles Rams kicker Blake Grupe was likened to a 'toddler' after being launched into the air while trying to tackle Arizona Cardinals' Devin Duvernay on a kickoff
Blake Grupe’s tenure with the Los Angeles Rams got off to a rocky start, with the kicker left injured after being launched into the air while attempting to make a tackle.
Less than 24 hours after the Buffalo Bills’ 37-34 overtime win over the Rams in Week 5, Los Angeles severed ties with kicker Harrison Mevis before signing Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad. The 27-year-old wasted no time making his presence felt in Sunday’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals, nailing a 44-yard field goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, returner Devin Duvernay rumbled 40 yards downfield before lowering his shoulder into Grupe, who managed to push him out of bounds — but not without a cost. The 5-foot-7, 156-pound kicker was spun around and sent flying following the hard collision, eventually crashing hard into the ground.
Grupe attempted to walk off the field after spending several minutes on the ground, reaching around the midfield logo before dropping to a knee. He eventually hobbled off under his own power while surrounded by members of the training staff.
Los Angeles promptly ruled Grupe doubtful to return with a knee injury. Instead of kicking an extra point on their first offensive drive of the second quarter, the Rams were forced to go for two following Matthew Stafford’s 15-yard touchdown pass to running back Blake Corum.
Taking to social media, droves of viewers couldn’t help but poke fun at Grupe following his unceremonious exit from Sunday’s contest.
“Blake Grupe sacrificing his career to show the world what it would look like if a regular fan tried tackling an NFL player,” an X user wrote, with another adding: “This is like those commercials when a regular human gets into an NFL game…”
Even Scott Hanson, the longtime host of NFL RedZone, got in on the fun, chiming in: “[It] looked like one of those toddler vs. mascot games.”
Others joked that the Rams may be feeling buyer’s remorse after parting ways with Mevis, who’s nicknamed "The Thiccer Kicker" because of his large build.
“Well if you had a thicker kicker maybe he would've withstood the hit better,” one person said. Someone else argued, “I bet Rams would've loved to have a kicker with more mass to him after seeing that play.”
Speaking to reporters earlier in the week, Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed hope that Grupe would bring stability to Los Angeles’ woeful special teams unit.
"This guy has experience," McVay said of Grupe. "He did a great job for Indy last year, has kicked in a lot of big-time professional settings, and we felt like he was the best guy available that had real game experience.
“And you debated going back and forth, 'do we want to try to create a competition similar to what we did with Karty and Mevis when we first brought him in?'
“And what we felt like was the best thing was really just to be able to give him an opportunity to come in here and do his thing, and hopefully build on some real cool momentum that he had established in Indy."
