Natalie Nakase’s Golden State Valkyries defended their home court against Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream, winning Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, 68-64, on Saturday.

The Dream held the lead for long stretches in Game 1, but the Valkyries rallied in the fourth quarter, backed by the crowd at Chase Center. The Valkyries’ coach addressed the home fans after the game, leaving them with a word of warning.

Natalie Nakase Sends Message to Golden State Fans After Game 1 Victory Over Dream

Chase Center, which has been dubbed “Ballhalla,” only got louder as Golden State cut into Atlanta’s lead. The arena erupted in cheers after Gabby Williams spearheaded a late run from her team to close out Game 1.

Nakase offered the fans some postgame advice after her team took a 1-0 lead: “I did feel a different roar. So great job! But hey, level up. We’ve got Game 2.”

She added: “Rest and recovery, Ballhalla. Careful what you drink tonight.”

Nakase had also addressed the Valkyries’ fans ahead of Saturday’s game, asking them to show “hostility” to the visitors, saying, “So, as soon as they’re announced, I need some hostility. If they do a challenge, I need hostility. If they’re shooting free throws, I need that thing to be rocking.”

Despite the commotion in Chase Center, Atlanta looked set to carry its unbeaten playoff run through Game 1 as it held a seven-point lead with just under nine minutes left in the fourth.

Golden State then held Reese, Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard to a combined 0-for-13 from the field in the fourth quarter.

Williams led all scorers in Game 1, finishing with 26 points. However, she also had a tough time from the field, shooting just 8-for-22, including 3-for-11 from the 3-point range.

Meanwhile, Gray led the Dream’s scoring charge despite shooting 5-for-19, finishing with 19 points. Howard also struggled to get her shot off, recording 12 points on 3-for-14 shooting.

Reese finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 5-for-11. However, the forward went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Reese also addressed her play in the fourth quarter, saying, “I wasn’t aggressive enough with the ball and trying to get the ball and get to my spot. So, definitely going to do a better job of that next game.”

Atlanta will look to even the series when they return to play in front of a hostile crowd for Game 2, tipping off from Chase Center on Monday.

The Valkyries have consistently sold out all of their home games and are now three wins away from winning a WNBA championship in just their second season.
