Hull City facing anxious wait over Vaz injury as Sergej Jakirovic explains Fulham tactics

The City youngster could be facing a spell out after being on the wrong end of a horrible challenge in stoppage time

Robinio Vaz leaves the pitch flanked by City's medical staff

Hull City fear the worst over the injury sustained by Robinho Vaz in stoppage time of Saturday's dismal 1-0 loss against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Vaz, who was introduced in the second half with City trailing to Alex Iwobi's 33rd-minute goal, was on the wrong end of a horror challenge from Ryan Sessegnon deep into stoppage time.

Sessegnon raked his studs down the back of Vaz's Achilles, and after a lengthy spell of treatment, the 19-year-old was helped off the field by City's medical staff, before the Fulham substitute was rightly given a straight red card by referee Chris Kavanagh.

Vaz was due to undergo a scan on Saturday night to determine the extent of any potential injury, though boss Sergej Jakirovic was not hopeful.

"He got a kick, I can say, between his calf and Achilles," the Croatian told Hull Live. "The Achilles is very painful, and he will go for a scan on his leg, and then we will see what happens. It looks like a bad one. He's very sad, and it's very painful for him because he cannot walk."

Sessegnon's rash challenge was checked and cleared by VAR, something Jakirovic referenced when asked if he thought the red card was the correct decision. "There is VAR, so if there is something wrong, they will call him (the referee) back," he added.

The City boss also explained his decision to hand Brooke Norton-Cuffy a first Premier League start in place of Ryan Giles at left-back, saying it was a call based on the summer signing having played there last season for Genoa in Serie A. It was also a tactic to try to thwart the danger posed by Oscar Bobb, although it backfired.

"It's about opportunity," he said. "Brooke played in this position in Genoa, mostly last season, left wing back, then right, and that was also so that we can better control Bobb because he's left-footed, so Brooke is right-footed. We can be better in possession, especially on that side.

"In the first half, we didn't have a left side. We gave them gold. We can clear this, Brooke, with his right foot. He can do better. It's mistakes, and this is happening in football."

On a yellow card, Lucas Herrington was withdrawn at half-time despite being one of City's better performers in a desperately poor first half, with Tim Iroegbunam coming on, and the Tigers moving to a back four. "Lucas came off because we changed the system, but he played good."
