Olwethu Makhanya’s performances since his move to Rangers have already seen him being linked with clubs in the Premier League.
As Rangers News exclusively reported at the start of October, the Ibrox outfit remain calm about the Makhanya situation. They believe that they hold all the cards with regard to the South Africa international’s future.
The centre-back joined the Light Blues on a four-year deal until the end of the 2029/30 season, and the club hold the option to trigger a one-year extension.
BBC pundit Kevin Kyle has had his say on Makhanya’s future amid his links to clubs in the English top flight. In his view, he does not see the centre-back being anywhere close to £15m and has laughed off suggestions of £25m.
How much would you be happy to sell him for in the summer?
While Kyle has admitted that Makhanya is good, he stated that it is too early for him to be in the conversation about moving to a Premier League club. In his view, he is not mature enough to take that step up.
The former Gers striker thinks that fans will also agree with this statement and would not want him to leave at the end of the season. He wants the 22-year-old to prove it consistently, and a few good performances against Celtic do not necessarily mean that he is ready for England’s top flight.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Kyle said: “I’m not saying he’s not good because he has been good, but it’s still very early to start to think you can command 15, 20, 25m quid for a kid that’s come in from the MLS and played eight games in the Scottish Premiership and played eight games, and against a Celtic striker who can’t hit a barn door.
“I think Rangers fans will also be that way, because they don’t want to lose him. Let him mature.”
Rangers News understands that the club are not actively looking to ship out the South African, but that is not how the market works. If he goes on to become the best player in the Scottish Premiership this term, there will be clubs in England that want to take a gamble on him.
At that stage, there is no chance that the Gers will not look to potentially break their record. The £19.6m fee they received from Fulham for Calvin Bassey is currently their record, and Makhanya could command over £20m.
