Martin O'Neill approaches 72-year Celtic low as Wilfried Nancy proven right with his unwanted record matched

Under-fire Celtic are on the brink of an unwanted piece of history if Martin O'Neill suffers another defeat this weekend.

Despite sitting four points clear at the top of the Premiership, pressure is mounting on the Scottish champions in the midst of a dire run of results.

The Europa League loss to Celta Vigo on Thursday night was their fifth loss in the last seven games in all competitions - having lost twice to Rangers, Ferencvaros and Benfica while seeing off Motherwell and Hearts in the league.

This is only the second time since 1991 that Celtic have slumped to this low-point - with Wilfried Nancy achieving the same sequence during his nightmare tenure.

The Frenchman became the shortest-serving manager in the club's history when he replaced O'Neill in December 2025 – only to be axed 33 days later. He oversaw just eight games, losing six of them, with O'Neill drafted back in to salvage a Double.

Nancy became a figure of ridicule from the get-go and was unable to muster the results early on to back his ambitious vision - but veteran gaffer O'Neill could steer the club to an even worse run this weekend.

Should Celtic lose to Hibs at Easter Road this weekend, it would be the first time since 1953 that the Glasgow giants have lost six of seven matches. The Hoops go in as heavy favourites to see off the Premiership's rock bottom side - but Marink Reedijk will be looking to stun Celtic and secure his first win as boss.

Since leaving Celtic, Nancy has spoken out about the player's struggling after conceding a goal - an issue that has proven to be the case on several key occasions this term from the Champions League collapse to LASK, to Thursday night's Europa League loss

Speaking in August, the former Columbus Crew gaffer said: "When I arrived, well, I'm not Martin O'Neill. I have different methods. However, I didn't want to change them much. Everything was going well in terms of the game. But as soon as we conceded a goal, we started to get nervous.

“I wouldn’t have had the same narrative if things hadn’t gone well in terms of performance. I don’t like ‘ifs’ or ‘shoulds,’ but the reality is that we lost games with 4.2 and 3.8 xG."
