Reports of football fans clashing at Sheffield train station as huge police presence seen

50 police vehicles were said to be in the area

A large-scale incident described as “worst seen in 10 or 15 years” between opposing sets of football fans sparked a huge police presence at Sheffield train station, it has been claimed.

An eye-witness to the incident has spoken to The Star, alleging that fans from differing clubs arriving at the station on Saturday (October 24) evening clashed on a platform.

The incident is believed to have flared up between Sheffield Wednesday fans, retuning to the city following their 2-0 defeat at Doncaster, and Shrewsbury fans passing through on their way back from a 3-3 draw at Rotherham’s AESSEAL New York Stadium.

It is alleged missiles such as glass bottles were thrown from one group to another and police arrived at the scene quickly, before smaller incidents involving other fans passing through later in the evening.

Dozens of police vehicles were pictured parked outside the station just before 7pm on Saturday evening, with another witness saying they had “never seen so many cop cars in my life”, with an estimate of 50 vehicles seen and more reportedly speeding down the Parkway shortly after.

It is unclear at this stage if any arrests were made or any injuries were suffered.

South Yorkshire Police, British Transport Police and the ambulance service have been contacted for more information.
