Shamar Springer is all set to make his Test debut as the West Indies were forced to make a change to their squad for the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh, as Keemo Paul has been pulled out. Shamar Springer has already played ODIs and T20Is for the West Indies National Cricket Team, and he was recently part of the India tour.
The Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced the changes in the Test squad after the Caribbean side completed their white-ball tour of India. West Indies lost the three-match ODI series 2-1, but the five-match T20I series ended in a 2-2 draw after the final game in Bengaluru was washed out. Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar was furious with Shamar Joseph after the Arshdeep Singh incident.
West Indies will now shift their attention to the important two-match Test series in Bangladesh. Shamar Springer has been added to the West Indies team as a replacement for fellow seam-bowling all-rounder Keemo Paul, who will return home due to personal and family reasons.
The 28-year-old has played three ODIs and 12 T20Is for the West Indies, and he is now set to make his Test debut, thanks to his strong domestic record. In 23 first-class matches, Shamar Springer has scored 1,043 runs at an average of 32.59 and taken 58 wickets at an average of 27.87.
Shamar Springer also enjoyed a strong batting season for Barbados in the 2026 West Indies Championship. He scored 251 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 50.20. However, he could manage only seven in eight innings at an average of 42.00.
West Indies had also considered Ojay Shields and Nial Smith as possible replacements for Paul. However, both fast bowlers are yet to recover from their respective injuries, opening the door for Shamar Springer to make his Test debut in the upcoming WTC series in Bangladesh.
Apart from Keemo Paul, West Indies' in-form white-ball captain Shai Hope has been rested from the two-match Test series in Bangladesh. The talented fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has also been withdrawn from the squad to manage his workload.
Paul had initially joined the squad as Joseph's replacement before being forced to return home because of personal reasons. Springer and Paul were both part of the West Indies white-ball tour of India. Now, Springer will hope to make the most of this opportunity in the whites.
The West Indies National Cricket Team will begin its Bangladesh tour with a three-day warm-up match in Dhaka from October 22 to 24. The first Test will be played in Mirpur from October 28 to November 1, followed by the second and final Test in Sylhet from November 5 to 9.
