“Selfless” Newcastle star close to signing new contract after summer transfer uncertainty

Newcastle United have endured a mixed start to the season, with Matthias Jaissle still working to establish his preferred team following a busy summer transfer window.

Injuries and inconsistent performances have created challenges for the Magpies, leaving the manager reliant on experienced members of his squad to help maintain their push for success.

One player who looked destined to leave St James’ Park during the summer could now be set to extend his stay on Tyneside.

Despite attracting interest from Premier League rivals, Newcastle are closing in on an agreement that would secure his future for at least another year.

Jacob Murphy Close to Signing New Newcastle Contract

According to the Daily Mail, Jacob Murphy is close to agreeing a new contract with Newcastle United that would extend his stay until the summer of 2028.

The 31-year-old winger is currently due to see his existing deal expire next summer, leaving Newcastle at risk of losing him on a free transfer. However, discussions have accelerated in recent days, with Murphy reportedly ready to accept improved terms to remain at his boyhood club.

The development represents a significant change from the closing stages of the summer transfer window, when Nottingham Forest made several attempts to sign the winger. Their offers reportedly reached £15 million, but Newcastle ultimately refused to sanction his departure after Jaissle made clear that he wanted to keep the experienced attacker.

Murphy — once described as “selfless” by former Magpies boss Eddie Howe — was understood to be open to the move, which would have offered him a fresh challenge elsewhere in the Premier League. However, the Newcastle manager reportedly placed considerable value on his leadership and experience, particularly within a relatively young dressing room.

Having joined from Norwich City in 2017, Murphy has become one of Newcastle’s longest-serving players. He has experienced the club’s transformation under successive managers and played an important role during their return to European competition.

His performances have been inconsistent compared with his outstanding 2024-25 campaign, when he registered nine goals and 14 assists. Nevertheless, injuries to fellow winger Anthony Elanga have handed Murphy additional opportunities in recent weeks, underlining his continued importance to the squad.

The proposed extension would also provide Newcastle with greater flexibility in the transfer market. Rather than allowing Murphy to leave for nothing next summer, the club would retain the option of demanding a fee if they decide to sell him.

A new deal would not necessarily guarantee that Murphy remains at St James’ Park until 2028, but it would protect Newcastle’s position should another club renew its interest.

For Jaissle, retaining Murphy would preserve an experienced option who understands the demands of playing for Newcastle. With a demanding schedule ahead, the winger’s leadership could prove valuable as the Magpies look to build consistency throughout the campaign.
